Sadly, John William Congdon Kerr passed away suddenly on December 26, 2022. A lifetime Croton resident, John was born at Phelps Hospital on September 14, 1967, to Grace and Jim Kerr who pre-deceased him. He attended K-12 in Croton schools where he was active in band and various activities. He was a very fine musician. He was also active in the local Cub and Boy Scout clubs and in the Asbury United Methodist Church where he served as president of the Methodist Youth Fellowship. John loved Croton – it’s geography, history, people and shops; in particular the Black Cow coffee shop where he loved to go for his morning coffee, and to read.
John graduated from SUNY Purchase in 1992 with a B.F.A. in Art History. Art and culture were his passion; he was also remarkably self-educated in the fields of literature, music, philosophy, current events and politics. During a recent trip to Europe, with his brother Bob, he was able to identify and discuss informatively all of the sculptures and their artists at the Louisiana Art Museum north of Copenhagen. In Paris, he spoke extensively and knowledgeably about countless French intellectuals interred in the Pere Lachaise and Montparnasse cemeteries. He fulfilled a lifetime goal of visiting the birthplaces and child homes of Soren Kierkegaard (Copenhagen, Denmark) and Friedrich Nietzsche (Rocken, Germany). He really knew his stuff.
John is survived by his four siblings Ginny (and Eric) Henderson, Beth (and Ted) Nelson, both living in Cape Cod; Bob Kerr of Denmark and James (and Carmen), Kerr of Cornwall, NY. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and cousins.
E.F. Carter Funeral Home of Croton on Hudson and Montrose is handling arrangements, including a funeral service, open to all, on Saturday January 7, at 10 AM, at Asbury Methodist Church in Croton on Hudson, followed by interment next to his parents James and Grace, in Croton's Bethel Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider making a donation to Search for Change, of Valhalla, NY. through their website at www.searchforchange.com. Search for Change is a not-for-profit helping those with mental health issues in job placement and housing and other challenges. John’s parents were, and John’s siblings are, very grateful to them for their many years of care and kindness and support.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.efcarterfuneralhome.com for the Congdon Kerr family.
