Janice Charlotte Randolph Shaffer April 10, 1940 — August 10, 2016 Janice (Randolph) Shaffer, 76, of Cross Lanes departed this life on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at CAMC Memorial Hospital following a prolonged battle with cancer. The eldest of three children, Jan was born April 10,1940 in Jackson County, West Virginia, to the late Cody and Hazel Jones Randolph. Among her earliest memories were of watching tearfully as her father walked away to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and the indescribable joy two long years later of watching him return to her a hero. She and her family moved to Cross Lanes when Jan was in junior high school. Engaged in April 1957, Jan wed Paul Shaffer on May 17, 1958. A 1957 graduate of Nitro High School, Jan has enjoyed enduring friendships with many of her former classmates. She pursued studies at Capitol City Commercial College and West Virginia State University, and worked for 12 years as a legal secretary before earning her real estate license to launch a distinguished 34-year career in real estate. She was a member of the Kanawha Valley Board of Realtors, the West Virginia Association of Realtors, and the National Association of Realtors. In addition to her hard work and continued professional development, Jan devoted considerable time to the pursuit of fun and enrichment with her family such as camping, boating and waterskiing, extracurricular children’s sports and activities, and nurturing relationships with family and friends. She developed a love of and demonstrated extraordinary talent in photography, shooting countless portraits and action photos of friends and family and then developing and printing her own film; and painting beautiful country landscapes on canvas, rocks, and anything that held a vision for her. Jan was preceded in death by her beloved husband Paul Lawrence Shaffer in April 2004; parents Hazel and Cody Randolph in February 1973 and August 1999, respectively; and infant grandson Todd Cody Lipford in August 2000. Jan leaves behind three cherished children; son Paul (Teresa) Shaffer II, and daughters Julie (Jim) Toler and Sherry (Todd) Lipford, all of Cross Lanes; grandchildren Jesse, Dana, and Reese Toler; Tré (Paul III) and Makayla Shaffer; and Stephanie (Keenan) Cummings; great-grandchildren Eiseley and Stormy Toler, and Harper and Kase Cummings. She is also survived by devoted siblings Judy (Mark) Hartigan of Nitro and Gregory Randolph of Cross Lanes; step Mother Judy Randolph; stepsiblings Paul (Pam) McCormick of Hagerstown, Maryland; Harold McCormick of Nitro; Opal Garnes of Confidence; Debbie (Dale) Hedrick of Winfield; and siblings-in-law Sharon Powers of Nitro, Tom Shaffer of South Charleston, and Willa Shaffer of Nitro; loving nieces and nephews; her loyal four legged baby Maks and a host of extended family and close friends who will miss her dearly. A tribute to Jan’s life will be held on Sunday, August 14, 2016 at 3:00pm at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home, 5233 Rocky Fork Road in Cross Lanes. Entombment will follow in the Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens Chapel of Peace. Pastor H.B. White, Jr. will officiate. Friends may call on Sunday from 1:00pm until service time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jan’s name may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
