Tom is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Cathy Egan; his children Beth Malara, Brian Egan, and Emily Egan; and four grandchildren: Allison, Connor, Cooper, and Lilian. He is also survived by his brother, Richard Egan; son-in-law, Toby Malara; and daughter-in-law, Stefanie Egan.
Tom is preceded in death by his parents.
Tom grew up in Park Slope, New York where he attended Power Memorial High School before getting his undergraduate degree from Iona College. He received his Master of Business Administration from Long Island University. Tom was retired from Freeport McMoRan where he served as Senior Vice President.
Despite spending nearly half of his life in Louisiana, Tom always considered himself a New Yorker and would accept no other designation. An avid baseball fan, Tom was first introduced to the game by rooting for the Brooklyn Dodgers. After the team moved to Los Angeles, an event Tom never really got over, he became a lifelong fan of the New York Mets.
A larger-than-life personality with a booming laugh, Tom enjoyed regaling his friends with his legendary storytelling ability, which included mostly true information plus a few “Tom Facts” as they’d come to be known. In retirement, he would spend time watching Turner Classic Movies and sailing the globe with his favorite travel partner, Cathy.
Tom played many roles in his life – devoted husband, father, brother, and friend – but his favorite role was being Poppy. He derived no greater joy than when he was spending time with his grandchildren.
