She was born June 13, 1929, in St. Louis Missouri, to Charles Vaughn O’Brien and Marie Francis Hyde O’Brien. Peggy graduated from Saint Mary's High School, Bridgeton, Missouri and earned her Master’s in Maternal Child Nursing. Peggy entered the convent (community of Saint Joseph, St. Louis MO) on September 15, 1947. While in the convent she spent time in Lima, Peru serving its poor as a missionary in the nursing field, she left the convent in September of 1968. She married Charles Mitchell on April 8, 1971, in Taunton, Massachusetts and was a professor at Arkansas Tech University for 20 years. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church and enjoyed bowling, traveling, riding motorcycles, and playing with her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and all her brothers and sisters, Marie, John, Dorothy, Bert, Richard, Rita, Edward, and Bernice.
Survivors include her son and his wife Pete and Shelly Persson of Mandeville, Louisiana; her granddaughter, Kailey Dixon (Caleb) of Gonzales LA and grandson Michael Persson (Natalie) of New Orleans; great-grandchildren Kaelyn, Kyla, and Mia. She also leaves behind 31 nieces and nephews; numerous great-nephews and great-nieces; and other relatives and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Grace Funeral Home, 450 Holy Trinity Drive, Covington, LA 70433 on Friday, January 12, 2024 at 12:00 PM with visitation on Friday beginning at 11:00 AM.
Burial will be in the Catholic Section of Rest Haven Memorial Park on Monday, January 15, 2024 at 2:00 PM under the direction of Humphrey Funeral Service.
