Fred Miles Smith

Fred M. Smith passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022 at the age of 87 and is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Mellor Smith. He was the son of the late James E. and Sallie Ruth Smith, brother of the late James C. Smith. He is survived by sisters Linda S. Bowles of Dallas, TX and Peggy A. Smith of Winter Haven, FL. He is also survived by nephews and nieces in Texas, North Carolina, and Georgia. He was born in North Carolina and lived in New Orleans and Metairie since 1947.

His lifetime achievements include: 26 years with First National Bank of Commerce, achieving the title of Senior Vice President and Trust Officer, followed by 26 years as Chief Financial Officer of Kemper and Leila Williams Foundation, also known as The Historic New Orleans Collection. After retiring from the Williams Foundation, he was elected its President; he also served as President of the Financial Analyst of New Orleans, President of New Orleans Estate Planning Council, President of City Park of New Orleans, Chairman of the Board for Mercy Hospital, President of the Rotary Club of New Orleans, Senior Warden of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, chairman of the Trust Division of Louisiana Bankers Association, member of the board for New Orleans Museum of Art, member of the restoration committee for St. Louis Cemetery No. 2, member of the Standing Committee, executive board member of the Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana, board member and Treasurer of Milne Home, advisory board member of Salvation Army, board member of Episcopal Housing for Seniors, Inc., chairman at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church Endowment Fund, and member of the Pickwick Club. In addition, Fred proudly served in the United States Navy.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service at Christwood Retirement Community, 100 Christwood Blvd., Covington, LA 70433 on Monday, August 1, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Garden Room, with seating limited due to health precautions. An open visitation and reception will be held beginning at 2:45 p.m. in the lobby of the Atrium building at Christwood Retirement Community. Burial will be held privately at a later date.
