Predeceased by his parents, Klaus and Erna Hinz, his brother Detlief and sisters Inga, Ilsa, and Tina, and his daughter in law Margaret (August 2024)
Survived by his children, Dave (June), Kathy (Brian), Wendy (Keith) and Fred, and their mother Ruth (John), his grandchildren Spencer May (Claudette), Sheldon May (Alia), Hannah Hinz (David) and Theodore Hinz, as well as 3 great grandchildren, Keridan Bateman, Noah May, and Jackson May. Also survived by nieces and nephews in Germany.
Herman worked hard all his life including driving truck, roofing, owning a small cafe on Esquimalt Road with Ruth, where he enjoyed interacting with customers, primarily construction workers, and of course farming in Germany and Canada.
He enjoyed playing (and later watching) golf, watching football and going to the casino and he especially enjoyed road trips, particularly driving up to Black Creek and Cumberland to spend time with Fred and Wendy and their families. When home in Victoria he liked spending time with Dave and June at their home in Saanich and Kathy and Brian at their home in Langford.
He lived in the same apartment for thirty years and was fiercely proud of his independence. He enjoyed spending time in the sunroom, growing a few veggies and chatting with fellow tenants.
He made it a point to speak to his kids every week in person or on the phone and often had stories to tell about someone he met at the casino or the grocery store from years past, or something going on with the family in Germany or some other tenant in his building. Mainly it was more of a check in than a news update. We will all miss those weekly calls!
Herman passed peacefully while visiting Fred and Theo at their home in Black Creek. He was doing what he loved, spending time with family, sitting in his recliner watching golf on TV.
There will be a private family gathering to remember Herman.
