It wasn’t just raising kids that expanded Jon’s world: he and Peggy also set out to explore every corner of the world. They wanted to dig into world cultures without filters or biases. Jon especially loved to walk the streets of a vibrant city far away, and bask in the glow of a different way of life. Most of all, Jon and Peggy loved to visit places where freedom was being renewed and civil society was just getting its footing. Jon could not abide a bully or a braggart, whether it was a cab driver in Jerusalem or in the White House in Washington.

Many of Jon and Peggy’s favorite trips were to Israel, to share a coffee and conversation on a dear friend’s porch, surrounded by the history of the Jewish people. Their Long Beach and Orange County Jewish communities were a core part of Jon and Peggy’s life, as creative participants and leaders. Even as the family spread across the country, Jon and Peggy were on the phone for blessings, every Friday evening. Jon and Peggy would agree to sit on a philanthropic or educational organization’s board — but only if they could do it together. 

Jon and Peggy dressed up for the opera together, brought picnics to the Hollywood Bowl together, and shopped for amusing tchochkes at the Sawdust Festival together. Though to be honest, sporting events and sports talk radio were always just a Jon thing. Jon made sure their life was always awash in flowers: literally, of course, and for every day of their lives, metaphorically too.

The sun set over the Pacific in magnificent shades of orange on November 11th, as we said goodby to Jon C. Feder. 

Jon lived in Laguna Beach for much of his life, where he could keep an eye out for migrating whales, enjoy a perfect espresso, and keep well connected with the world. He was a consummate family man: devoted to his children and grandchildren, sister Jean Phelps, his immediate and extended family. And there were many many family members he gained by choice, not by blood, because Jon was also a consummate friend. He never wanted to be the center of attention, but was always at the center of conversations.

Jon was born in 1941 in Long Beach, California, when laughing at a Marx Bros. movie sent his mother into contractions. It was an appropriate way to enter the world. Jon was a stand-out high school student in the field of Being a Nice Guy. From there he went to UC Berkeley and Hastings Law School, where he must have learned something, but more importantly, made friends he treasured for the rest of his life.

Most importantly, he met his other half: Peggy Rosen. They were not separated by more than a beam of sunlight until this past June.

Jon and Peggy went to Germany in the service of the US Army, an experience the Western Powers barely survived, and returned with a lot of gasthaus merch and new baby Marc. Back in California, Jon built a career in estate planning, based as much on his honest caring and deep wisdom as his knowledge of the law. Also, to his delight, David soon arrived, and after a discrete pause, Sharon.
