Joseph graduated from Jefferson High School in Dresden in 1939 and started working as a truck driver for many years before working as a Heavy Equipment Operator for Peabody Coal Company.
On June 15, 1941, he married Mary K. (Powelson) Balo who passed away on April 14, 2012. Joseph was a life member of Conesville United Methodist Church, a member of the United Mine Workers Local #1188 and a member of the Coshocton Moose and Elks. He enjoyed woodworking, golfing, camping at Hickory Flats for many years and bowling.
Joseph is survived by his four children, Karen (Richard) King, Terry (Kay) Balo, Kathy (Doug) McMillen and Dennis (Sally) Balo; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 23 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty Magness.
Along with his parents and wife, Mary, Joseph is preceded in death by his four sisters, Mildred Ross, Annabelle Norris, Eloise Matt and Pauline Powelson and two brothers, David and Ralph Balo.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Given-Dawson-Paisley Funeral Home. Due to health and safety concerns related to COVID-19, social distancing measures will be in place and there will be a limited number of people inside the funeral home at a time. We also ask that you please wear a face mask at all times for the health and safety of our guest and employees.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2021, at 1:00pm at Franklin Cemetery.
