Wallace bravely enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country for several years. He served with the Battery B 6th Battalion, 29 Field Artillery Regiment as a Field Communications Crewman. During his time in the service, he was stationed in Germany and finished his service in Ft. Lewis, Washington, being honorably discharged on June 28, 1963. Wallace went on to work for the City of St. Louis as the Riverfront Superintendent from 1978 until his eventual retirement in 2010. Wallace had a passion for his Christian faith and even served as a Deacon at the Overland Christian Church in St. Louis, Missouri.
When he wasn’t working, Wallace enjoyed boxing, baseball, basketball, and football. He was very creative and was known as a skillful leather craftsman, who made belts and purses upon request. He also had a deep love and passion for music. Wallace was a songwriter and wrote a specific song called “Driftwood.” He recorded many songs and even taught himself how to play the piano! His mother, Zephyr, drew a picture of piano chords on piece of cardboard, since the family could not afford a real piano at the time. He then taught himself to play the piano by using this mock cardboard piano that his mother created.
Friends and family will fondly reminisce on Wallace’s kind attributes. His family claims that he was sweeter than sugar! He could always be counted on to help others who were in need. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and love him.
Wallace is reunited with his parents, Giles Hooks and Zephyr DeMoss-Hooks; brothers, Dewight Hooks, Maurice Hooks, and Lester Hooks; and sister, Josephine Hooks-Berry. He leaves his legacy to his beloved wife of 37 years, Sharon Hooks; children, Paulette Hooks, Kevin Hooks, Angela Hooks, Ann Evans, and Johnna Brown; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and friends.
A Memorial Service with Final Military Honors will be held at 10 AM at Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery on Friday, November 1, 2024. The family will be hosting a Reception Gathering and meal afterward at 11 AM at Memory Gardens Funeral Home.
