Ramona Barbara (Sowell) Townsend, age 77, passed away on October 22, 2014 at her home in Corpus Christi. She is survived by her 6 children, Barbara Barber, Cecelia Townsend, Dr. Thomas Michael (Mike) Townsend, Jr. (Kay), all of Corpus Christi, Joan King (Richard) from Austin, Dr. Stephen Townsend (Jill) from Hobbs NM, James Townsend (Kimberly) from San Antonio, and her ten grandchildren: Joshua and David Barber; Marnae, Mikayla and Logan Townsend; Nicholas, Jennifer and Monica King; and Olivia and Molly Townsend. She is preceded in death by her parents, Cecelia Sowell and Raymond Sowell, her brother, Clifford Sowell, and infant grandson, Walter Townsend.
Ramona was born August 8th, 1937 in San Antonio to the late Raymond & Cecelia Sowell. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church parochial schools and graduated from Providence High School in San Antonio, TX. She married in 1956 to Thomas Michael Townsend, Sr. and moved as a newlywed to Mission, TX in the Rio Grande Valley. There Ramona raised her 6 children and was involved in community work at St. Paul’s Catholic Church. She volunteered in the Altar Society, cleaning and ironing altar linens and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America even serving a term, as its Grand Regent. Ramona moved to Corpus Christi in 2000 where she continued to be active in her church. She is also a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Clara Driscoll Chapter. Ramona was an avid collector of 1st edition books, crocheted baby blankets for all her grandchildren, along with many that she gave away. She was very talented with ceramics, her Halloween ghost sets, that she gave away, are some of her most artistic and whimsical pieces.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 27th, 5:00 to 8:00 pm with a rosary recited at 6:30 that same evening at Cage Mills Funeral Directors, 4901 Everhart Rd., Corpus Christi, TX 78411.
Funeral mass will be celebrated Tuesday, October 28, 10am at Most Precious Blood Catholic Church 3502 Saratoga, Corpus Christi, with Fr. Bob Dunn officiating. Graveside committal service will be at the San Fernando Archdiocesan Cemetery #3 in San Antonio at 2:15 where she will be placed next to her mother, Cecelia.
