He was known as Shaft because he played the drums so well. He furthered his education at Del Mar College Trade School. He was a truck driver in Dallas, also did carpentry work and odd jobs.
He served as an usher at an early age at Calvary First Baptist Church under the leadership of Dr. H. C. Dilworth, Jr., and continued under the leadership of Bishop C. E. Richardson, Sr., where he sung in the H. C. Dilworth Ambassadors Choir and the Men’s Chorus. He played the drums for Rising Star Baptist Church (Pastor Mark Stewart) and True Faith Baptist Church (Pastor Wilton Allison).
When his health failed him, he became a resident at the Palms Nursing Home for 13 years. He later became a member of Emmanuel Church Ministry (Pastor Herbert J. Duhart).
He is preceded in death by his parents Deacon Samuel E. Stoney and Maggie Stoney.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories two sons, Derrick Ward (Emily) and Eric Ward, both of Round Rock, Texas; two daughters, Jerri Pruitt-Matthews, Houston, Texas and Chloe Faye Stoney of Corpus Christi, Texas; Two sisters, Sondra Duhart (Minister Herbert Duhart) of Corpus Christi, Texas and Karen Stoney of Dallas, Texas; and six grandchildren.
A public visitation for Michael will be held Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 10:30 AM at Memory Gardens Funeral Home, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415. A prayer service will occur Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 12:30 PM, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415. A committal service will occur Saturday, January 29, 2022 at 3:00 PM, 8200 Old Brownsville Road, Corpus Christi, Texas 78415.
