Martha L. Houston

Martha graduated from University of Central Arkansas with a B.S. degree in Home Economics. She later received her Master's Degree in Counseling and Psychology from The University of Houston. She was employed by several school districts with her final ten years being at West Oso ISD. She was a Licensed Professional Counselor and after her retirement continued to renew her license annually. She often met previous students who always recognized her and told her how much she encouraged them to be successful and continue their education.

Martha was a faithful member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, where she served on various committees, most recently serving as President of United Methodist Women. She was also active in the Emmaus Community. She loved reading the Bible, inspirational books and particularly enjoyed her prayer group. She belonged to several bridge clubs, birthday club and an Onze Club. She enjoyed belonging to an RV camping club and traveling throughout the country. She was an accomplished seamstress and recently began to enjoy quilting and traveling to quilt shops all over Texas with her daughter.

Being a ten year cancer survivor, Martha volunteered for the American Cancer Society, visiting and counseling cancer patients during their journey of healing. She also served on the Breast Health Committee. She was also a member of the 'First Friday' Committee which provides free mammograms for women in need.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, George Nathaniel Biggs, Sr. and Helen Striplin Biggs; siblings, Irene Pearson, Georgia Westmoreland, Jeanette Pressly, Julia Bailey and Joye Bolls.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Barbara Ann Houston Moretich (Jim); grandchildren, James Moretich (Valerie) and Martha Ann Moretich; and also siblings Mary Ann Denniston, Ruth Boyd, Sarah Merritt (Bud), Carolyn Casteel (Arlen), Gloria Tyler (Rosamond) and George Nathaniel Biggs, Jr., and many nieces and nephews.

As spoken by a friend, 'A kinder, gentler soul I have never known. She lived her faith and shared it with us all. One of the tender mercies of my life'. Memorial gifts may be made to St. Luke's United Methodist Women, American Cancer Society or First Friday.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 pm. at Memory Gardens Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
