Louis Scott Murray

Louis Scott Murray, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend entered into the presence of his Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, February 9, 2024. Scott was seventy-eight years old. He will leave a great void in the hearts of those who loved him.

Scott was born on a Saturday, September 15, 1945, in Edinburg, Texas. He was the only child of Hester Louis Murray and Melba Louise Glover Murray. Shortly after Scott was born, his family moved to Corpus Christi where he lived the rest of his life. Scott graduated from Ray High School in 1963. While attending Delmar University, he met the love of his life Paulette Cummings. They were married two years later and remained married until Scott’s passing.

Scott graduated from Corpus Christi State University in 1970, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He worked as a research biologist until 1973, when he was hired by Central Power and Light where he enjoyed a successful career until his retirement in 2000. Of his many roles and accomplishments at Central Power and Light, his most rewarding work was related to the environment. Scott was instrumental in the creation of the CCA Marine Development Center, the first redfish hatchery in the world.

Scott was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist. His favorite hobby was carving custom fishing lures and catching big trout in Baffin Bay. In 2011, Scott published World Class Texas Trout Tomorrow, a book on the importance of our trout fishery and coastal conservation. In 2017, CCA recognized Scott with their Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2022, Scott was named Volunteer of the Year by the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program, and in 2023, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Harvey Weil Foundation. Over his lifetime, he spent countless hours working with local conservation groups and state agencies to protect the Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay from overfishing and harmful environmental practices.

Whether hunting or fishing, Scott was never alone. He relished being outdoors with his family and friends. Scott guided hundreds of hunting and fishing trips for his son, his friends, and his grandkids, creating lifelong memories and relationships.

Scott was known as Pawpaw to his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. Pawpaw and Mee-maw hosted the grandchildren and their friends every summer at Wind Drift, their house on Baffin Bay. Pawpaw attended baseball games, musicals, baptisms, graduations, and never missed a birthday.

Scott trusted Christ as his savior in his early thirties. His life was “transformed” almost overnight. He and Paulette attended Grace Presbyterian for 50 years. He served at Grace as a deacon and elder. In 2013, he and Paulette made Second Baptist Church of Corpus Christi their church home where they helped teach Sunday School and served on various committees. One of Scott’s greatest joys, later in life, was serving with Child Evangelism Fellowship and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with kids in public schools. He and Paulette also served on the CEF board for many years.

Scott’s faith was strengthened through the years as he faced serious health issues. He leaned on God with consistent prayer and Bible study throughout his life as he lived with heart disease, cancer, and, most recently, as he battled ALS. Scott and his family wish to express special thanks to his loyal and dedicated caregiver Dede Matthews.

Scott’s parents mentioned above preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Paulette Murray, his son Kirk Murray [Robin], and his grandchildren Ben, Austin [Sydney] and Megan Murray.

A Celebration of Scott’s Life will be held at 2 PM, on Saturday February 24, 2024, at Second Baptist Church, 6701 S Staples St, Corpus Christi, Texas 78413. Pastor Dana Moore of Second Baptist CCTX will be officiating.
