Helen Jackson

Helen Virginia Dowty Jackson, 106, passed away on Sept. 11, 2011. She was born in San Angelo, TX on June 30, 1905 to Sam Seelye Dowty and Rena Mason Dowty. She attended Texas A&M and the University of Texas, Austin, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

She was employed as the first woman reporter on the San Angelo Standard Times, and subsequently worked for the Associated Press in Washington D.C. She moved to Corpus Christi in 1941 with her husband Robert M. Jackson who became editor of the Caller Times.

Helen loved gardening and flower arranging. She was a floral judge and founding member of the Antiques and Flowers Garden Club. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church Garden Club, made the arrangements for Sunday services for twenty years and was in charge of the church garden. She was particularly proud of the way the rose garden looked last spring.

Helen loved traveling in Mexico. She made many adventure-filled trips there with close friends. She was also a founding member of Las Parlanchinas, a group of multi-national and bilingual women dedicated to building relations between English and Spanish speaking people. She was a longtime member of the Pan American Round Table.

Preceded in death by her husband, survivors include her son, Robert (Ashley) Jackson of Eugene, OR; four grandchildren, Jessica (Richard) Fleck of Evergreen, CO; Benjamin Jackson of Hyannis, MA; Annie Jackson of Washington, D.C.; Holly Jackson of Portland, OR; and two great-grandchildren, Greta Helen and Sean Fleck, both of Evergreen, CO.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the First Presbyterian Church Garden Club. A memorial service will be held Saturday October 29 in the garden of the First Presbyterian Church.
