首先感謝鄭牧師在家父病危時懇切替他禱告.

回想起5/24 那天當急診室醫師告知爸爸將無法渡過子夜，我很難過的將手機貼近爸爸的耳邊播放詩歌,這一生最美的祝福.優美的詩歌止不住奪眶而出的眼淚,滴落在爸爸的衣襟上面.經過六個多小時無間斷的詩歌聲音流淌在狹小的急診室病房內,神奇的事發生！爸爸等到了從飛機塲直奔而來的外孫兒Jonathan and Justin,此時已是第二天清晨三點· 

神的恩典粉碎醫生的宣判！

理智上，我們深知父親即將離世,但情感上萬般不捨的想挽留他老人家最後的氣息·當面對最痛苦的決定時，我和弟弟第一次一起禱告之後,正當提到GOD 的時候，醫院的Chaplain赫然走進病房！我們異口同聲的說:是神派你來到我們中間！

當時Chaplain 帶領我們再度禱告時,原以為彌留中的父親會得到平安，殊不知此時父親的喉嚨發出巨大的聲音,儀器上的數字大幅度的上下波動….Chaplain 目睹了此景,態度懇切的告訴我：Listen to your heart. You will know the time.  

我們依然哀痛的掙扎不知道父親的意願,第三天早上我們再次禱告後又提到GOD的時候,Chaplain 又及時走進病房,此時她恭敬的用聖油劃十,膏抹在父親的前額. 記得第一次是陳金昌牧師在父親高齡87歳作脊椎手術前為他老人家禱告並且油膏在他額頭. 

我相信爸爸臨終前接受主,在父親住院期間我第三次禱告是跪在地上和兒子Aaron 一起禱告兩個小時過後,妹妹説當時儀器營幕兩次漆黑之後他老人家安詳辭世. 雖然我很哀傷但內心平靜，這幾天時光倒流許多珍貴美好的回憶是父親留下的禮物.

謝謝你們以懷念的心陪我一起送別父親.

爷爷 was brave, not because he wasn’t scared to make these decisions, but because he did them despite being scared. And because he knew that, despite having to start over again and again, those sacrifices would set up a life for his family that he didn’t get growing up. And it’s through these sacrifices that we get to enjoy the life we have now. What usually takes multiple generations to achieve, he provided in one lifetime. And all these sacrifices he’s made, these are only the ones we know about. There are countless more that were made in silence that we will never know about, but whose gift we get to enjoy everyday. 

So just like 爷爷, I don’t think we need too many words to honor his memory. Honor him by making silent sacrifices for the ones you love and care about. Honor him with our actions and with how we behave when no one is looking. Honor him by changing our behaviors when everyone is looking. But most importantly, honor him with authenticity and honor his legacy in your own way, every day.

Thank you, friends and family, for being here to honor and celebrate the life of Ting Liu.

They say that true love is selfless. And that it is prepared to sacrifice. Here, the definition of selflessness is to be “concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own”.

And the facts throughout my grandpa’s life showed how he embodied that definition of selflessness.

I am here, in America, because of him. He left for Taiwan on his own as a teenager due to the political upheaval in China. He immigrated to America to provide for his children better opportunities for success and stability. Despite the challenges of having to go to a completely foreign new place, learn a new language, and interact with different kinds of people, he still did it for his children. In doing so, he put the needs and wishes of his children above his own. And I benefited from that sacrifice and selflessness.

Whenever I needed to be picked up from school or needed a place to stay, he was always willing to help. Grandpa’s was always a safe place. He did not have to spend that time taking care of me and could have done other more enjoyable activities, but instead he helped. In doing so, he put the needs and wishes of his grandchildren above his own.

And when we would go on family vacations to national parks, Grandpa would always pack these Taiwanese pancakes and beef briskets. They were delicious and very popular. Whenever it came down to the last pieces, he would offer his portion to me. He did not have to, but he still did. In doing so, he put the needs and wishes of his grandchildren above his own.

In sharing these stories, it’s clear that Grandpa’s love was true love. And that it was selfless.

Grandpa, you have done so much to set up a good life for all us even if it meant sacrificing so much for you. We miss you and  rest easy in heaven.

PART 3
For the future of his children, our dad sacrificed his own ambitions at the top of his game.  At the age of 49, he immigrated to the US with us, giving up a fulfilling and promising career.  With his superb financial management, we were able to finish all our education without any student loans.  As life progressed and with the birth of each grandchild, he tirelessly took upon additional duties: nanny, chauffeur, and most proudly the role of grandpa.  Given Stan’s late marriage and living out of the state, he often regretted that he could not provide direct care for his youngest twin grandkids.  He always strived to be fair to all his children, providing all the help to each family.

Our father gave us his heart and soul.  At the pinnacle of his career, he chose our future over his own ambitions.  All in all, to give us the very best and to wish us success.  In this ordinary life, he personified selflessness.  We shall always treasure his love and teachings for the rest of our lives.

PART 2
Our father has worked extremely hard and was promoted to the Chief Pharmacist at the hospital.  He was always caring and empathetic to his patients.  There were times when the patients were strapped for money, our dad would quietly and secretly pay for their pharmacy cost.  It is this kindness that has long instilled in us.  With his great sense of financial vision and planning, we were able to live our life comfortably.  Given the heavy emphasis on education, he sent all of us to private schools for best learning.  Despite the expensive tuition, he would still manage to take us out for nice meals, entertainment, and fun travel.  We were exceedingly lucky.

In late 1979, the political climate in Taiwan had sharply changed owing to the newly established diplomatic relationship between the US and mainland China.  Unsure what the future may hold, our parents decided to immigrate to the US.  At the time, our maternal aunt had been living in Hawaii for decades and could apply for immigration for us.  Therefore, our mother traveled to Honolulu to establish her residency first.  This left us behind.  Our dad continued his busy career while providing all the care to us.  It wasn’t an easy task, to say the least.  Yet, he succeeded.

PART 1
Our father, Ting-Chun Liu, was born on Nov. 4th, 1930 in a small rural area in Tatong City, Shanxi Province, China.  He was the eldest boy of five, three girls and two boys in the family.  He studied in a missionary Catholic school nearby his house.  After the hard-fought battle against Japanese invasion at the end of Second World War, the Chinese Communist Party swept the country with revolutionary changes in a civil war.  Experiencing the political and social unrest, our grandfather was exceedingly worried about the children’s future and had to send our dad away.  He was barely a teenager.  With a small amount of money, he left his village and ventured into the metropolis for better opportunities.  At that time, other siblings were too young to travel safely and therefore left behind.  Who could imagine this temporary parting would have lasted for four decades before our dad could visit and reunite with his family again in the 1980’s.

In 1946, our father traveled far south to Shanghai.  He worked hard and excelled in academics.  He was able to get into the National Defense Medical School, studying pharmacy and pharmacology.  With the relocation of the School to Taiwan at the end of the civil war, he finally finished his education in high distinction. Subsequently, he passed his licensure exam and started his pharmacy career at the prestigious Veterans Hospital in Taipei.  While in school, he met our mother, who happened to be a student matriculated in nursing.  After 4 years of courtship, they got married and had us.  In a glance, their marriage lasted for 65 years!


我們的父親劉廷濬先生,於一九三〇年十一月四日出生於中國山西省大同市的一個農村. 家中共有五個孩子,二男三女,父親是家中的長男,爺爺從小就將父親送往家附近的天主教會學校唸書. 一九四五年抗戰勝利後,共產黨到了家鄉附近實施土地改革,爺爺主動將家裏的土地納出,避免了慘烈的批鬥. 睿智的爺爺觀察出留在家鄕的危險與無望,便將父親喚出,給了父親一些金塊及袁大頭,叮囑父親即刻啓程負笈他鄕,當時叔叔尚為年幼,爺爺不忍心讓他跟著父親奔波流離,誰能預料此去濶別四十年!
 
之後父親便從家鄉輾轉到了上海刻克苦勤讀考上國防醫學院藥劑系,隨著學校遷移到了台灣. 父親以優異的成績畢業後考取藥劑師職照任職台北市榮民總醫院的藥劑師. 在參加國防醫學院山西同鄕同學會認識䕶理系的學妹,我們的母親. 交往四年後於1958年結褵至今65年.  父親婚後在經過多年的勤榮工作,被提升為總藥劑師.  父親在工作時若有病人因為經濟拮据無法支付醫藥費用時,他都會私下慷慨解囊幫助他們. 父親獨到的經濟眼光及善於理財,家中的物質條件慢慢提昇. 他讓我們就讀當時蔣夫人創辦的私立靜心幼稚園一直到復興小學和復興初中,即便是昂貴的學費,父親依然在每一週末為補償媽媽勤儉持家,都會帶著我們全家到西門町看電影,享美食,寒暑假外出旅遊,生活過得充份舒適而安逸.
 
然而這樣美好的日子卻被一九七九的中美建交給擾亂了,經過一番深思熟慮後,父親與母親決定提前移民美國. 由於四姨住在夏威夷,母親便先行前往夏威夷取得永久居民. 當時父親一個人在台灣忙於工作並兼母職照顧我們.
 
父親放棄優渥的收入及臺灣舒適的生活,只為成就我們的末来.
四十九歲退休來美,秉持著銳利的經濟眼光投資理財,使我們在毫無學貸的環境裏順利完成學業.  隨著毎個外孫誕生及成長父親無怨的充當保姆,司機和他最自豪的爺爺身份.  由於弟弟晚婚住在外洲年邁的他常常愧疚沒有親自照顧到雙胞胎的孫子和孫女.
 
父親將他一生無償奉獻給了我們! 在他人生事業最巔峰的時候,他選擇為了我們的前途而放棄自己的事業. 在他的生命中,我們深刻體會了他平凡中的偉大.  
 
雖然父親已經離開了我們,但是他給我們的教誨與父愛深植我們心中將會伴隨我們一生.

Dear Papa,

The past year and a half we spent a lot of time together in the senior home. We will miss your handsome smile and appreciated your good manner and patience. Although we will not be able to celebrate your birthday this November, we will still sing a Happy Birthday song to you. We will certainly miss Toni’s visits every day and the fresh flowers she brings.

Rest in peace. May God comfort your soul.

親愛的姐姐,

昨日得悉姐夫仙逝的消息,真是萬分悲慟和不捨.請節哀並且保重自己的身體.
姐夫走得安祥也沒有痛苦,我們雖心生不忍,但是年過九十就是高壽,就是善終.我們雲雲眾生最終所要求的不就是這樣的一種最好的最自然的一種解脫嗎？放下一切,一了百了.
執子之手 與子偕老,現在姐夫沒有遺憾潚灑的先妳而去,你就放手吧!
願妳將心中的思念化作永恆的祝福.請務必多保重,節哀順變.
我未能親自參加喪禮内心感到遺憾和難過,盼姐姐特別原諒和饒恕.
請節哀,保重身體.

Some of my earliest childhood memories were spent at my grandparents house during the summer. Summers usually meant math prep classes and whenever I had a question on math, my grandfather would diligently and patiently explain and work through the problem with me until I understood the concept even when I was a less than patient student.

He applied his diligent nature to all walks of his life. Whether it be teaching me math and calculating the best interest rate for his finances to picking me up from my extra curricular activities and preparing his homemade green onion pancakes, there was a steadfastness and diligence to everything he did.

I will forever remember my grandfather as a loving giving individual who always went out of his way for us, who brought his entire family to the United States so that they would be given every opportunity to succeed and who also had the biggest appetite for steak and seafood. We deeply love and miss you. You will be in our hearts, now and forever. 

Matthew 11:28-30 - Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
