His parents were James Lee Ryals and Genevieve McBeth Ryals. He had two sisters, Joanne and Norma and he was the youngest.
Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 18 and served from November 1957 to November 1959. He then moved to California where he met the love of his life, Jean. They just celebrated 61 years of marriage.
Jim began his career at the Long Beach Police Department May 1, 1967 and met many kind officers. He moved up the ranks and retired as a Commander in December 30, 1993.
Jim was retired for 31 years and over those years he and Jean traveled in their motorhome to Mount Rushmore, Iowa, Arizona, New Mexico as well as Northern and central California to visit longtime friends. He always said he was a very blessed man.
He passed away February 22, 2024, peacefully at home with his family. He will be laid to rest at Pacific View Memorial Park in the Garden of Valor - Police. At his request, there will be no funeral service.
He is survived by his wife, Jean, his daughter Karen and husband, Mark. As well as his grandchildren Cameron and wife, Gianna, Lindsey, Jake and Ashley; and his great granddaughter Payton Jean.
