Marc Leonard Hammer, beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 14th, 2024, at the age of 73 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was born on December 9th, 1950, in Brooklyn, New York to Joseph and Shirley Hammer. Marc grew up in a close-knit family and carried those values throughout his life. He spent his formative years in Miami, graduating from Miami Coral Park Senior High School and furthering his education at Miami-Dade Community College and Florida International University.
Marc led a life filled with love, laughter, and dedication to his family and community. Marc always had a love of sports. He played baseball from the ages of 6 through 13 years old, with his dad as coach. He went on to play basketball and football at Miami Coral Park Senior High. Throughout his life he was a passionate Boston Celtics fan, until the Miami Heat came to town.
Marc loved volunteering. One of his fondest memories was when he spent his first summer after high school as a camp counselor at Camp Blue Star in North Carolina. Later in life, Marc was a member of Kiwanis Club of Coral Springs serving as the Kiwanis Club advisor for Coral Glades Senior High School.
Marc was active as a member of Old Cutler Presbyterian Church serving as a deacon.
Marc dedicated many years to Southern Bell as a telephone repairman and an active union member and leader in the Communication Workers of America. He was passionate enough about labor rights and equality, he protested on picket lines for better wages and conditions. Marc's career was always marked by a strong work ethic and a passion for helping others, thereby making a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
Marc always enjoyed traveling. Cruising became his favorite way. After retirement he became a Cruise Specialist with Dream Vacations.
Marc is lovingly remembered by his devoted wife, Dorothy (Dottie), who stood by his side through all his trials and tribulations, through sickness and in health, and through richer and poorer for the last 50 years. She was the love of his life.
Marc is also lovingly remembered by his son, Michael and wife Ana; his daughter, Mindy and her husband, Scott Gunn; three grandchildren; his sister, Roberta and her husband, Charles deMenzes; and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was known for his kind heart, infectious smile, and unwavering support for those he loved.
A celebration of Marc's life will be held later this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at miamiproject.org, a cause close to Marc's heart. Assistance with Marc’s final arrangements is provided by Kraeer Funeral Home, Coral Springs, Florida.
