Mildred Esther Lea Schoppa Mickan was born September 9, 1920 in Vernon, Texas the daughter of Eddie and Ida (Foerster) Schoppa.
She graduated from South Lockett High School with the Class of 1939, while in high school she played softball and volleyball of which she was the Captain of the Volley Ball Team for two years. After high school she attended Draughons Business School in Lubbock, Texas majoring in Business Bookkeeping.
On September 2, 1945 she married the love of her life Ben Mickan of Copperas Cove in Vernon, Texas at the Saint Paul Lutheran Church.
In 1951 the Mickan’s moved from Giddings, Texas to Copperas Cove where they built Ben’s Service Center/Humble Gas Station.
Along with her involvement in the family business Mildred was active in the Copperas Cove Community with the PTA, the Red Cross as well as teaching Sunday School at Immanuel Lutheran Church. In 1956 Trinity Lutheran Church was built in Copperas Cove, where she and her husband were charter members. She also served as Secretary for the Congregation and was President, Vice President and Christian Growth Chairperson of LWML throughout her life. She was very instrumental in the Trinity Lutheran Church Sausage Fest that is held each year in November using A.H. Mickan’s recipe for the Sausage. Mildred enjoyed preparing the breads and desserts that would be sold during the fundraiser.
In 1976 Mildred retired from the family business to allow the next generation to take over operations.
Mildred was preceded in death by, her husband Ben very unexpectedly in 1970; a son, Ronald W. Mickan; a son in-law, Adois Speer; a grandson, Kevin Mickan and a great grandson, Jared Peak; three brothers and four sisters.
She is survived by three sons, Russell Mickan and his wife Charlene, Marcus Mickan and Gordon Mickan and his wife Nina all of Copperas Cove; three daughters, Kay Speer of Kempner, Sarah Mickan Smith and her husband Dean of Forney and Jeanette Kendrick and her husband John of Oakalla; twelve grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren.
The Mickan family will receive guest for a time of visitation from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Sunday, September 28, 2014 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Copperas Cove. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, September 29, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Copperas Cove with Rev. Bernard J. Schey, Pastor officiating. Interment will follow in the Copperas Cove City Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Lance Speer, Aaron Mickan, Bryan Mickan, John Mickan, Jason Smith, Kyle Smith, Layne Kendrick and Seth Kendrick.
In lieu of flowers Mildred asked that memorial contributions be made to Trinity Lutheran Church C/O the new building fund, 518 East Highway 190 Copperas Cove, Texas 76522.
