Y Huu Nguyen

He is survived by his loving wife, Thao and his six children: Khai and his wife Loan; Thuy and her husband Thuan; Minh and her husband Luan; Ngan and her husband Thang; Khiem and his wife Trang; daughter-in-law Yolanda; Binh and her husband Quyen. He is also survived by his 19 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He was an incredible man. His life can be defined in 3 words – Freedom, Family and Education.

Freedom

He was born in North Vietnam. In 1954, he migrated to the South for freedom with his wife and 3 children. With nothing, he rebuilt his life and owned a candy manufacturing company. In 1975, 21 years later, history repeated itself. With the fall of Saigon, he migrated to USA, the land of freedom. This time, it was with his wife and 8 children. Once again, he rebuilt his life and became a successful business man.

Family

Nothing was more precious to him than his family. His life’s mantra was for his family to love and support each other. Family is his legacy!

Oh, how he loved his grandchildren! They were his life! When they were young, every day, he dropped off and picked up the grandchildren from school, fed them and tutored them until their parents picked them up after work. He took pride in helping with cooking dinner. The daily routine ended with the family eating dinner together before the children and grandchildren returned to their respective homes.

His wife was the love of his life! He adored and was devoted to her. He shared many happy memories as well as hard times during their 71 years together.

Education

He always said, “The wealth, the fame, the power that you have today can be lost tomorrow but you will never lose education. When you learn it, it will stay with you forever.” He practiced what he preached. He always challenged himself to learn something new. Whenever he had free time, he taught himself advanced school subjects, so he could tutor his grandchildren up to high school level. The grandchildren owed much of their achievements to him and he was so proud of them.

He was an avid language learner. The last few years of his life, he was often seen practicing French and Spanish. His love to learn inspired all who knew him!
