Matt Miltz, beloved father and husband of Highland Village, TX, passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2021. Matt was born on Veterans Day on November 11, 1971 in Emporia, KS. Emporia is known as the birthplace of Veterans Day and when Matt was a child, he would say the parade was for his birthday.
He attended elementary school in Emporia until his family moved to the Topeka, KS area when he was in middle school. Matt graduated from Shawnee Heights High School where he was active in varsity golf, soccer, and wrestling…winning 5th place in Kansas his senior year. In 1991, Matt enlisted in the Air Force, serving as a jet engine mechanic until 1994. He then transferred to the 190th Air Refueling Wing in Topeka and this was where Matt found his calling as a boom operator as well as his 2nd family in the 190th Air Refueling Wing, refueling airplanes all over the world. Matt was a very thoughtful man and whenever he returned home from a trip, he would bring gifts for everyone in the family. Many of these gifts still adorn the homes of those blessed to be in his circle.
In 1999, Matt earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Washburn University. And in 2003, Matt’s world changed when he attended a friend’s wedding and met Michelle, the love of his life. They were married in Cozumel in 2005, attended with a small group of family with a big party that followed in Topeka. In 2006, Matt and Michelle welcomed baby Marissa, and the M&M family was born. In 2008, Maci joined the M&Ms and completed the family.
As he prepared for a career beyond the military, Matt earned an MBA from Baker University in 2010. In 2012, Matt retired from the 190th Air Fueling Wing and the family moved to Texas, where he transitioned his work efforts to a successful career in business. Anyone who met Matt quickly learned Michelle, Marissa, and Maci were the center of his world. As a devoted father, Matt was a staple at the girls’ activities whether the role was cheer dad or hunting guide, he was there for his girls. Even with a busy work life and activities with the girls, he always made time for date nights and getaways with Michelle. Matt loved to travel, and whether camping, exploring the beach or the mountains with his family, he always made sure everyone had a special time. Matt was an excellent cook and could always be found manning the grill, smoker, or kitchen stove. Whether a small family dinner, special event, pool or block party, Matt made the best meals with love. Matt kept a positive energy making everyone around him better and will be missed by everyone blessed to have been touched by his life.
Matt is survived by his loving wife Michelle; daughters Marissa and Maci; grandmother Tima Bjorkback of Overland Park, KS; mother Linda Nantz and her husband Gary of Topeka, KS; brother Eric Miltz, his wife Sherry, daughter Emma of Lawton, OK, and son Luke of Roeland Park, KS; mother-in-law Debby Witthar and her husband Dennis of Topeka, KS; brother-in-law Randy Haas, his wife Keri, daughter Hayden, and sons Jackson and Colby of Topeka, KS. He was preceded in death by his father, Steve Miltz.
Matt was patriotic, a proud veteran and a passionate supporter of veterans’ charities. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, Matt would have loved donations to Wreaths Across America. Services for Matt will be held August 27th, 2021, at 10:00 AM at Rolling Oaks Funeral Home, 400 Freeport Parkway, Coppell, TX 75019. Burial with full military honors, will take place at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, TX 75211, on August 27th, 2021, at 2 PM.
