Ted Bauer was born in July of 1935 in Chicago IL., the first-born son of Bernard and Mary Bauer. Ted grew up in Chicago and rural Anoka County Minnesota. He graduated from Anoka High School in 1953. After joining the military, Ted served in the United States Marine Corp, receiving an honorable discharge in Feb 1957. The GI bill allowed Ted to attend Northwest Electronics School, studying electronics. Ted married Joeanne Slater in 1958 and was hired by IBM in 1959 as a customer engineer in Minneapolis. The marriage of Ted and Joeanne produced three children, Mark Robert Bauer, Gwen Marie Bauer, and Kay Ann Bauer all born in Minneapolis.
In 1964 IBM announced a monumental new large computer called the IBM360. So, Ted and family moved to Poughkeepsie NY at that time. Ted and family moved back to Minneapolis 1965 to better serve customers using the new IBM360. Then Ted and family moved to Mechanicsburg PA, afterwards in 1970 he became part of the programming center in Poughkeepsie NY. Then arriving at the IBM Systems Center in Gaithersburg MD in 1975. During these exciting early days of the IBM360, Ted played a role in the development of some tools, such as the IBM360 MVS and a product called ZAP. Most of his official career in Gaithersburg he spent supporting large systems running the IBM360 hardware and software. In 1991 Ted officially retired from IBM, but stayed on another 20 years doing what he loved, programming and supporting IBM's mainframe computers. Ted's final day at IBM was on September 28th, 2012, after 53 years with one company.
Ted and Barbara Nance were married under a Pin Oak on the Hill and Dale farm in June of 2001. They lived in both Washington and then Allegheny County MD. Ted served the local community in many ways in his retirement years. He was heavily involved with a senior education program called “Life Long Learning”. He was an active member of the Railroad Club and volunteered at the Allegheny County Museum several days a week. Ted enjoyed meeting people and hearing about their experiences in Western Maryland.
Ted's parents, brother (Bernie Bauer) and daughter (Kay Ann Bauer) preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife (Barbara Nance), brother (Frank Bauer), sister (Diane Bauer), daughter (Gwen Patterson), son (Mark Bauer) and stepson (Zeb Ramsey).
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Gearhart Funeral Home in Coon Rapids MN, from 10:00 am till 11:00 am with a Memorial Service at 11:00 am at the Funeral Home.
Followed by a graveside service at Morningside Gardens at approximately 12PM with the local honor guard present in support of Ted for his military service in the United States Marine Corps.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Ted can be made to World Central Kitchen.
