Phil was born on August 15, 1936 in Ashland, WI to TC and Alice Knutson. He grew up having one sister, Carlotta. Hard work was instilled in Phil as a young boy; he was often curious and eager to learn new things.
Phil earned his Bachelor's degree at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and received his Master's degree from the University of Minnesota. He also served six years in the Air National Guard. Phil met the love of his life, Florence Camrud, while at Concordia. The two married in 1958 and settled in Sisseton, SD where they had two children. Phil held many positions including teacher, counselor, assistant principal, principal, and director throughout his working career. Phil greatly valued education and was proud he had the opportunity to educate others for many years.
They later retired in Coon Rapids at the Realife Cooperative where he made countless friends. Phil stayed busy in his retirement. He enjoyed traveling and had the opportunity to visit several countries. Phil was a charter member at the Anoka Rotary club and a member of the Sons of Norway. He was also a very active member at his church, Grace Lutheran. Phil was sharp and up to date on all current events. His latest business venture was being the proud co-owner of InReach Physical Therapy.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, following Minnesota sports, and "Choir Practice" with the men from church. Phil took great joy and pride in watching the success of his children and grandchildren. He was incredibly generous: always the first to extend a helping hand.
Those lucky to have met Phil will forever treasure the impact he made in their lives.
He is survived by his beautiful wife Florence, children Karen Plemel (Tom Bergeren) and Doug Knutson (Pam), grandchildren: Kendra Aakre (Heath), Robert Plemel (Katie), Gunnar Knutson, Sophie Knutson, and two great grandchildren: Raena and Murphy Philip Plemel. He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Carlotta.
Celebration of life to be held 11 AM Thursday October 20, 2022 at Grace Lutheran Church. 13655 Round Lake Blvd NW, Andover, MN. The visitation will begin at 10 AM. A private burial will be at a later date in Forest Hill Cemetery in Anoka, MN.
