Tom was a Staff Sargeant in the Vietnam War with the Fifth Special Forces (Green Beret’s) Group, US Army where he served as a Combat Leader and Medical Specialist. He earned two Bronze Stars and one with Valor. After the war he entered Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida, to start Flight Training. He married Kathryn Mae Gorton in April , 1974. He became a CFII and taught flying for 5 years. He was hired by Braniff Airlines, the same airline where is father, W.W. Thompson flew for over 35 years. Braniff went out of business and Tom flew for Continental Airlines for 27 years , and then United. He was a loving husband, and grandfather to Jayden and Bella, always spending so much time with them. He is preceded in death by his Mother June Alice Harris and father Wilbur Wayne Thompson. He is survived by Kathryn, Son’s Bryce Cole Thompson and Christopher Wayne Thompson, Grandson Jayden C. Thompson and granddaughter Isabella Mae Thompson, Brother: Robert Thompson, Sisters: Sandra Hornig, Robin Hedrick and Lynda Hasselbrock, Stepmother Margaret Thompson and many nephews and nieces.
He will be buried in the Houston National Cemetary, Houston, Texas September 14, 2018 at 1:15 Sharp, Lane Two Pavillion.( Fly with the Wind Poppee .) Memorials can be made to the Wounded Warrior’s Project.
