Marilyn was born in Babcock, Wisconsin to Vivian Stewart and Marvin Meier on November 4, 1943. She spent her childhood years in Babcock, Wisconsin and Chicago Heights, Illinois. She attended college at Iowa Wesleyan University and graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. She married Micheal R. Gibbs on April 8, 1967, and together they moved to Illinois. She spent 5 years teaching English at both the middle school and high school levels. She then spent the next 14 years as a stay at home mom raising her 3 children in Algonquin, Illinois. She returned to the work force in 1985 as an elementary school aide before moving on to work at Century 21 Real Estate for the next 12 years. Marilyn retired in 2000. In retirement, initially Marilyn and Mike split their time between Algonquin and their trailer in Wisconsin, where they had spent the past 21 years camping with a close-knit group of friends. In 2002, they sold their longtime home in Illinois and moved to Montgomery, TX for their winter dwelling while continuing to spend their summers at their trailer in Wisconsin.
Throughout her life, Marilyn loved to serve and lead others. She was active for many years in the Jaycee Women’s Organization and held many different roles such as President of her local chapter, President of the Illinois State Jaycee Women’s Organization, and finally as a Committee Chairman for the National Jaycee Women’s Organization.
Marilyn treasured her role as a mother to her 3 children. She loved going to all of their sporting events and band concerts. She adored her children and embraced every moment with them. She also loved her role as Grandma. Marilyn was just as active in attending her grandchildren’s events as she was as a mother. She was an avid card player and was an active member of many bridge clubs during her retirement, which brought her great joy. Marilyn enjoyed spending time traveling the country with Mike to see Scotty McCreery, a famous country singer. Her souvenirs include a signed picture of Marilyn with Scotty and a signed guitar.
Her mother, her father, and her stepfather precede Marilyn in death.
Marilyn is survived by her loving husband of 51½ years, Micheal Gibbs, her 3 children, Jon (Amy), Kelly (Robbie), and Carrie, and her 3 grandchildren: Kayla, Collin and Max.
A visitation for Marilyn will be held Tuesday, January 29, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Metcalf Funeral Directors, 1801 E. White Oak Terrace, Conroe, Texas 77304, with a funeral service the following day, Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at 2:00 PM.
