Jan was raised in Houston, Texas. She graduated from Sam Houston High School. Jan would spend her summers babysitting the children in the neighborhood. It was her caring nature for children that lead her to earn a Bachelors of Education and Masters of Counseling degrees from the University of Houston. Jan taught in the Aldine and Spring school districts for over 30 years.
Jan loved to travel and explore. In the summers she found a way to combine her want for traveling with her love for teaching by chaperoning 100’s of students on overseas trips. She visited Asia, the Orient, Germany, and England. In later years, Jan and her sidekick, Betty Stevens, had many travel adventures from snow skiing in Canada and Colorado, scuba diving in the Caribbean and Mexico, cruising the deep blue seas into ports all over the world. They enjoyed touring castles, glass blowing factories, wineries. They also went to Spain to learn how Lladros are made and to Ireland to watch the artist make Waterford crystal. Both of these became items shipped back home. The souvenirs were also physical memories of their adventures, but it was the stories of their antics on these adventures that brought us so many laughs.
Jan was an award winning photographer. She participated in the Nikon Shoot off in Cozumel for years, bringing home first place titles for her underwater photography. Many of the photos were used in the company’s advertising campaigns.
Waiting for her arrival in heaven were her parents Edward and Lessie Lewis. Her soulmates Reginald and Betty Stevens, and her four legged treasures Alex and McKennon. Jan is survived by her sister Suzy Sharrett and husband Bill, brother Phil Lewis and wife Sande. Nephews Greg Canion (Shelly), Cliff (Kati), Steve Alford, Dub Sharrett (Neeli), Casey Sharrett (Shelby), Phil Lewis Jr. (Julie), Shawn Lewis (Heather), Ian Lewis (Erin), 22 great nieces and nephews, and 3 great, great nieces.
