George Edward Tidwell was born on December 31, 1942 to Frances Marie and Edward Hill Tidwell in San Antonio, Texas. In the early morning of June 14, 2024, he passed away at his home in Conroe, Texas. A seemingly simple man, he had a remarkable life. He loved history and could recall the details of countless wars, world events, and the succession of rulers. He embarked on many adventures of his own, starting in west Texas where he grew up, he spent childhood summers camping and fishing in Colorado with his family, worked in the oil fields of Texas as a young man, and later ventured to work and live in Burma and Bolivia. Later, he and his wife sought adventure together in Alaska, where they lived for 16 years.
George loved nature. The places in his life are marked by the birds he loved and followed -- black capped chickadees visiting his windowsill on cold Alaska mornings, fledgling blue birds in his Georgia garden, or the first signs on the horizon that purple martins had returned to Texas. Many a weekend found him in the wilderness of Alaska’s white mountains, brewing camp coffee, panning for gold, and fly fishing for arctic grayling.
No matter where he was, the center of George’s life was his family. He was a devoted husband and father, ever the protector, our fountain of humor, and the heart of our family. A wonder of nature, he beat the odds time and again as he fought to remain here with us. His battle has ended, and finally he rests, though his spirit sustains us.
George is preceded in death by his father, Edward, and his mother, Frances. He is survived by Amy Tidwell, his wife of 31 years; their children, Fredrika, Frederick, and Lando; brothers Conrad and James; and many nephews and nieces.
A celebration of life for George will be held Wednesday, June 26, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Cashner Funeral Home, 801 Teas Road, Conroe, Texas 77303.
