STEVENS, Mary E. (Nixon), 78, of Concord, NH, passed away peacefully on February 24, 2023, at Havenwood Heritage Heights Health Services Center. Born on May 7, 1944, in Boston, she was the beloved daughter of the late Joseph G. Nixon and Eleanor M. (Doherty) Nixon.
Mary grew up in Cambridge and Waltham and graduated from Waltham High School in 1963. In 1966, she graduated from Lynn Hospital School of Nursing (Lynn, MA) as a Registered Nurse. She loved being a nurse for the Visiting Nurse Association of Boston, helping many patients throughout the city. In 1968, she married her husband at St. Luke Church in Belmont and went on to start a family. After having two children, she began a new career in 1978 as the founder of The Book Exchange, a used bookstore in Paoli, PA.
Later in life Mary returned to school, graduating from Villanova University in 2000 with a BA in Liberal Arts and English. She was inducted into the Alpha Sigma Lambda National Honor Society, the oldest and largest national honor society for non-traditional students.
Mary was a self-taught pianist and artist, completing many oil paintings on glass, wood and canvas. She and her family enjoyed many camping trips from New England through Tennessee along with the eastern Canadian provinces. They also traveled to Colorado and California as well as Germany, France, and Switzerland.
She is survived by her loving husband Thomas C. Stevens; daughter Laura of Tulsa, OK; son Matthew Stevens and wife Tara of Lexington, MA; loving grandmother of Matthew T., John D. and Jillian V. Stevens of Lexington, MA and Thomas M. Buoye of Tulsa, OK; sister Eleanor J. (Nixon) King and husband Joseph of Beltsville, MD; her brother Joseph G. Nixon, Jr. and wife Kip of Waltham, MA; and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, March 2 from 3pm to 5pm at Bennett Funeral Home located at 209 N. Main St, Concord, NH. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, March 3 at 10am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church located at 180 Loudon Rd, Concord, NH. A burial to immediately follow at 12pm at New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery located at 110 Daniel Webster Highway, Boscawen, NH.
