Born in Rensselaer, Indiana, on October 22, 1935, Neal was the son of Wayne and Viola (Wolfe) Jones. After graduating from Crawfordsville High School in Indiana, he attended Wabash College, also in Crawfordsville, for two years.
Neal enlisted in the U.S Marine Corps in 1956. While on active duty, he attended Miami University in Ohio, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. After completing the Officer Candidate Course at Quantico, Virginia, he was commissioned a 2nd, Lieutenant.
Neal’s military assignments included Kodiak, Alaska and two tours in Vietnam. He was awarded medals and ribbons, including The Navy Commendation Medal with Combat “V”, Good Conduct Medal, Navy Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Citation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnamese Service Medal with 4 Stars and The Vietnamese Campaign Medal. After serving fourteen years, he was honorably discharged as a Captain.
After moving to New Hampshire in 1975 with his family, Neal worked for State Farm Insurance in the Claims Field for twenty-seven years, retiring in 1997. He took professional insurance courses, earning the designation, Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter.
In his free time, Neal sang in the Wesley United Methodist Church Choir, doing so for over twenty-five years. He also loved the outdoors and taking extended camping trips with his family. He enjoyed hunting, especially deer and bear, which he would do with his two sons and grandson. He was a hobbyist photographer and a runner who competed in races in his younger years and then became an avid walker in his senior years. In 1989, Neal married his lovely wife Jane and in retirement, they enjoyed many cruises aboard Holland American Cruise Lines.
Neal is survived by his loving wife of thirty-two years, Jane; his eldest son, Kenneth Jones, and his wife Lynn, of Seekonk, Massachusetts; his son, Andrew Jones, and his wife Cheryl, of Bedford, New Hampshire; and his only daughter, Elizabeth Governanti, and her husband Anthony, of New Boston, New Hampshire. Neal also has six wonderful grandchildren: Meghan Schwartz, Gabrielle Jones, Kyle and Courtney Jones and Domenic and Donovan Governanti. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren: Gage, Ella and Savy Schwartz. Other family members that predeceased Neal include his two brothers, Jamie Duane Jones, and Dick Jones, both of Crawfordsville, Indiana.
A private graveside service will be held for the family at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, New Hampshire, during the warmer months.
Memorial donations can be made in Neal’s name to the Wesley United Methodist Church Music Fund.
