Steve Haninger was born in Chicago, Illinois, on May 31, 1947, to Margaret B. Haninger and Glenn J. Haninger. Steve was the first of seven children. On August 9, 2022, Steve took his last peaceful breaths at home before taking the hand of God. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Susan (nee Weber) Haninger, son Andrew Steven, and daughter Katherine Celeste. He is also survived by his siblings Michael K. Haninger MD, (Nancy) James F. Haninger (Jane), Paul T. Haninger (Emily), Sally E. Lukens (James) and Kellie J. Erwin (John). Our lives have been enriched further by many nieces, nephews, cousins and grand-nieces and nephews. Proceeding him in death are Margaret (nee Edwards) Haninger, mother; Glenn J. Haninger MD, father; Kathleen Shelley Haninger, sister; Robert Fruin MD, uncle; Erin Rose Haninger, niece; and Elsie Haninger, stepmother.
Steve studied at the Ohio State University for three plus years. He went on to serve six years in the United States Air Force. In the Air Force, he practiced photography and learned electronics. Upon discharge, he began a more than 35-year career with Coulter Electronics, retiring from Beckman-Coulter Electronics in October of 2011.
On September 20, 1975, at St. Alphonsus Church in Prospect Heights, Illinois, he married Susan K. Weber. In their 46 years and 10 months together, they raised, loved and enjoyed two great children, Andy and Kathy.
There was no other place Steve would rather be than at home with his family, all four of them. An exception to this would be the many vacations they took to Pawleys Island, South Carolina.
Steve was a brilliant soul whose interests were wide and varied. These interests at one time or another included photography, woodworking, cars and auto mechanics especially on his treasured VW Beetle, Celtic music, old-time music, guitars, stereo sound equipment, cooking (especially Wassail, cookies and scones), crossword puzzles and Jeopardy. It seems as if there was nothing he couldn’t do! To call him “Mr. Fix-it” is more than apt as we almost never needed any outside expertise, we had Steve!
Steve loved ice cream and his consumption of such was legendary. Walking in the winter woods and bird observation where also favorite moments for Steve.
Steve gave many hours assisting his wife and her colleagues at Trinity Catholic School. He was so happy fixing what needed to be fixed, pulling wires, and bantering with the teachers and staff. During the St. Christopher Bingo years and at the summer festivals Steve made good friends and fond memories.
Steve was uncomfortable with recognition and being the center of attention. Living his life laced with service to others has had a profound effect on his family and friends.
We would like to thank Steve’s medical teams at the James Cancer Hospital and the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center for their care and advice. We also thank the therapists and nurses from Amber Care. Our brief time of service with ProMedica Hospice was so appreciated and we thank each and every nurse, aide, chaplain and social worker that came into our home for their efforts and concern. Finally, special thanks to our pastors at St. Christopher Church Father Wojciech Stachura, Father Andrzej Kozminski and retired pastor Monsignor John Cody for their visits, prayers and love.
Family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 15, at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Columbus, OH 43221. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 16, 1t 10:30 a.m. at St. Christopher Parish, 1420 Grandview Avenue, Columbus, OH 43220.
