Roger Gordon Hunter, Sr. passed peacefully at Westerwood Memory Care in Columbus, Ohio on June 7, 2024. He was born November 2, 1936 to Bruce Duraine and Lois (Helms) Hunter, at his grandparents’ farm in Carey, Ohio. He always said he remembered being born, and it was snowing outside.
Preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 43 years, Shirley Ann (Hagen) Hunter, daughter Katrina Anita Lucia (Hunter) Futrell, and son-in-law Nathaniel Walker Futrell I, and sister-in-law Linda (Hagen) Bentley.
Roger graduated from Linden McKinkley High School in Columbus Ohio, studied engineering at The Ohio State University, and earned a Master’s in Engineering from George Mason University in Virginia.
He was a talented electrical engineer and was always drawn to aviation. He took pilot lessons at age 15 and had to ride his bicycle to his lessons because he was too young to drive!
His love of flight led him to the Federal Aviation Administration, where he was a research and design engineer until his retirement.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Jack Hunter and Linda Lorenz, brother-in-law Fred Bentley, his dear friend, Mina Ray, and his children and their spouses: Dawn Hunter Perry, Clif Hunter and Javier Rodriguez and partners Chris Ratliff Chris Fain and Michael Strickland, Roger, Jr and Tracy (Ruby) Hunter. His seven grandchildren are Brock (Autumn) Hunter, Nathaniel Futrell II, Michael Perry, Joslyn (Matt) Daniel, Yvonne Perry, Jackson Hunter, and Madison Hunter. He also has sixteen great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and another due in September. He was also loved by many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
We are grateful to Mina for her loving care after his wife passed, as well as to the devoted, caring staff of Westerwood Memory Care, and Capital City Hospice.
Memorial services will be planned at a later date. Donations or gifts in Roger’s memory may be provided to Lewy Body Dementia research or to the donor’s charity of choice.
