Robert Sherman Hamilton, age 96, of Upper Arlington, Ohio, died peacefully surrounded by his family on August 28, 2024. He is now home with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was an extraordinary man, loving husband, great father, adoring grandfather, and wonderful friend. He touched many and will be greatly missed.
A visionary businessman, Bob helped found Liqui-Box Corporation where he served as President and later as Vice Chairman. He was also a Director of Lancaster Colony Corporation for many years. Bob was a natural leader who, above all else, loved solving problems. An entrepreneur at heart, he was naturally curious, believed in hard work and loved to do it—all traits he’s passed down to two generations and counting.
Bob was, and remains, a force. He had sharp instincts, never did things halfway, wasn’t afraid to take risks, and was the first to show up when it really counted. He had a wealth of knowledge to share, even when you weren’t asking... He loved deeply, often sternly, but only because he believed in others and knew what they were capable of.
Bob was born on March 25, 1928, at White Cross Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He graduated from the University School of Ohio State University, where he developed many lifelong friendships. After graduation, he served in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948, before continuing his education at The Ohio State University, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. It was there he met his lifelong love of 74 years, Beth Bennett, and declared on their first date that he would marry her.
Preceded in death by his parents Robert and Katharine Hamilton and his sister Aubrey Leonard, Bob is survived by his wife of 74 years, Elizabeth B. Hamilton; son, R. Matthew Hamilton (Claire); daughter, Ann K. Hamilton (Michael Mercil) and three grandchildren Robert B. Hamilton (Lindsey), Emmett M. Mercil (Erin), and Monnett E. Hamilton.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Road, where he was an active member. Visitation hours will be from 4:00 – 7:00 PM on Monday, October 21, 2024 at Schoedinger Northwest, 1740 Zollinger Road.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Young Life of Central Ohio, 1200 Chambers Road, Columbus, OH 43212; Ohio History Connection (Memo: Conestoga Endowment) Development Office, 800 E. 17th Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43211; or the charity of your choice.
