Rita Brigita Spulgis, (nee Karklins), born November 21, 1932 in Riga,
Latvia, passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on June 4, 2024 at her home in Columbus, Ohio.
Rita was preceded in death by her husband, Ivars Spulgis, son Andreys, parents Andrejs and Amalija Karklins, and sister Astra Ozols.
Rita was a strong woman who led an extraordinary life. In 1945 she escaped with her family as the Soviets occupied Latvia. Her family moved throughout Germany and Austria landing in a Displaced Persons Camp in Memmingen, Germany. Rita and her family immigrated to the United States in 1950 and settled in Springfield, Ohio. Rita graduated from Springfield High School in 1951 and on August 27, 1954 Rita graduated from Springfield City Hospital School of Nursing, becoming a Registered Nurse. She was a devoted RN for 37 years ending her career at the former Mt Carmel West Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
Rita was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She loved all animals, enjoyed reading, especially poetry, spending time tending to her flower garden, going on cruises and listening to her favorite music. She also loved sharing the stories of her childhood in Latvia and of all the wonderful people she met throughout the years.
Rita is survived by her children Brigita (Richard) Pierce, Edwins, Elmars (Candi), grandchildren Brigita, Laura (Bryce Heltzel) Pierce, Erik Pierce, Alexandra, Adelade (Griffin Hill), Karina, Ethan, Rebeka and great grandson James Heltzel.
Rita remains forever in our hearts.
Private graveside service was held at Sunset Cemetery, Galloway, Ohio on June 11, 2024.
