Richard W. Grogan

Richard W. Grogan, affectionately known as “Rick” or “Ricky”, unexpectedly passed away on Friday morning, September 27, 2024, at the age of 64. Rick was born on August 25, 1960, to the late Robert and Rebecca Grogan in Columbus, OH. He was a lifelong resident of Upper Arlington, Ohio, where he made a lasting impact on the community he loved and the people who were fortunate enough to know him.

Rick graduated from Upper Arlington High School, where he developed his lifelong passion for sports, particularly basketball and football. As a team manager for the basketball team during high school, Rick was not only dedicated but also beloved by his peers and mentors. His enthusiasm for the program continued throughout his life, as he remained an ardent supporter and dedicated volunteer for Upper Arlington athletics. Coaches from all sports held Rick in the highest regard, often commenting on his dedication and willingness to do whatever was needed for the team. His tireless efforts and positive attitude made him one of the most well-known and appreciated figures in the stadium—recognized and popular with both UA and visiting coaches, cheerleaders, players, staff, and parents alike.

After finishing his education, Rick joined the family real estate business, where he spent the majority of his professional life. His conscientious work ethic and commitment helped him become an integral part of the company’s day-to-day operations. Rick had a keen eye for detail and took pride in overseeing the rental properties, treating each unit with the same care and consideration he extended to people.

Rick’s love of sports extended beyond the local community. He was a passionate fan of the University of Michigan, often driving his Michigan blue car through Buckeye territory - a testament to his enthusiasm for TTUN and sense of humor. His devotion to the Wolverines was a source of many good-natured conversations and friendly rivalries. Rick’s ability to recall sports stats and his deep knowledge of his favorite teams made him a go-to for sports trivia and a trusted source of information for anyone looking to discuss a game.

Other than his love for sports, Rick was a man of simple pleasures. He could often be found enjoying a beverage and chatting with friends at Crimson Cup or Bob Evans. He also loved spending time outdoors, riding his bike, or playing games - especially cards. Rick’s competitive yet friendly spirit shone brightest during family gatherings over the holidays, where he was known to be a fierce Euchre player.

In addition to Rick’s unpretentious charm, one of Rick’s most endearing traits was his refusal to recognize the chill of winter. He was frequently seen shoveling snow or on the sidelines in his khaki shorts, regardless of the temperature. This was just one of the many ways Rick’s unique personality shone through.

Rick will be greatly missed by his older brother, Robert Grogan Jr., his younger sister Kathy Hall (John), his nephew Brad Hall, aunts and many cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 PM on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, OH 43221, where visitation will follow until 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers and in remembrance of Rick’s life, the family asks that charitable donations be made to the Upper Arlington Athletic Fund at the Upper Arlington Education Foundation.
