Richard Arthur (Dick) Farr, age 104, died peacefully at home in Upper Arlington on June 14, 2022, with his four children at his side. He was born June 11, 1918 in Hamilton, Ohio, to Arthur Leonard Farr and Henrietta Elizabeth Getz. Richard grew up in Hamilton, was inducted into the National Scholastic Honor Society his senior year and graduated from Hamilton High School in 1934. At the University of Cincinnati, he was inducted into the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society, and the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 1939.
A life-long lover of sports, Richard was exceptionally accomplished at table tennis, golf, tennis, basketball and baseball. While at UC, he earned a Varsity C letter for being a pitcher on the University baseball team. After graduation, he worked as a sales engineer for Ashland, KY Oil Company and then the Cincinnati Ordnance District, procuring war material for the United States military forces. Richard joined the United States Navy and attended the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and was commissioned as an engineering officer in 1943. Upon graduation, he married Mary Margaret Bollinger at the Naval Academy Chapel. During World War II, he was trained in mine sweeping gear, assigned to Treasure Island, San Francisco, then to Oahu, Hawaii, and then on the island of Peleliu, Palau in the South Pacific.
After the war, Richard returned to civilian life in Columbus, OH and worked as a sales engineer for the Columbus Refrigeration Company before becoming self-employed as a manufacturer’s representative for McQuay Incorporated. In this role, he designed and sold heat transfer coils to original equipment HVAC manufacturers. Richard designed and marketed worldwide computer engineering software for air conditioning and refrigeration components and systems. Earning his General Aviation pilot’s license in the 1950s, and eventually his Instrument Rating, he flew his own plane until age 93.
In addition to his parents, Richard is pre-deceased by his two sisters, Zelda and Marion, and his wife of 61 years, Margie. He is survived by daughters Marcia (Mike), Leslie and Julie, and son Jim (Danielle); 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Richard A. and Mary M. Farr Supporting Organization, 3665 Hilliard Station Road, Hilliard, OH 43026. Visitation Hours will be held Sunday, July 17, 2022, from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and a Celebration of Life will be held Monday, July 18, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Schoedinger’s Funeral Home 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, OH. Gravesite service to follow at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Cemetery, 6440 South High Street, Lockbourne, Ohio.
