She was the daughter of the late William Henry Ogsbury and Mary Lambert Randolph Ogsbury. Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Jim Shanahan in 1998, twin sister Gladys (2018), sisters Dorothy (2016) and Jenette (1980) and grandsons Bobby Monaghan (2023) and Brian Shanahan (2024).
Phyllis and Jim Shanahan met each other in Durham N.C. where Phyllis lived with her family and Jim was stationed following his military service as a Marine Captain in the Pacific Islands in World War II. Phyllis and Jim married in 1946 in Durham N.C. and then moved to Columbus, Ohio to begin a residence that lasted until today.
Phyllis is the mother of 5 children- Jim Jr. (Antoinetti Delewese) of Pittsburgh PA, Kathy (Bob Monaghan) of Trumbull Ct, Mike (Peggy Rogers) of Harwinton CT, Craig (Vicki Bruzzese) of Columbus OH and Susie (Bob Lombardi) of Dublin OH and “Grammy” to 18 grandchildren-
(Jim/Antoinetti)- Brian, Mike, Jimmy, Jeff, Patrick;
(Kathy/Bob)- Bridget, Bobby, Brendan, Colleen;
(Mike/Peggy)- Susan, Erin, Mike Jr.
(Craig/Vicki)- Sarah, Cecilia;
(Susie/Bob)- Katie, Caroline, Laura, Suzanne.
Phyllis is also the Great Grandmother to 41 great grandchildren- Jim & Antoinetti Shanahan (13), Kathy & Bob Monaghan (7), Mike & Peggy Shanahan (8), Craig & Vicki (6), Susie & Bob Lombardi (7).
We celebrate the wonderful life of Phyllis Shanahan in Columbus, Ohio as a longtime member of Brookside Country Club where Phyllis was a serious golf competitor on the country club team and tennis player. She competed in all sports but her love was golf, tennis and horseback riding.
Phyllis was a longtime volunteer for charities in Columbus- Meals on Wheels, Riverside Hospital, blood drives, Our Lady of Peace and St Andrew church. She was an avid OSU football ticketholder going to all home games and away games at Michigan and all professional golf in and around the Columbus area.
Phyllis has been called the Grand Matriarch of the Shanahan family by her children and grandchildren. She was a beautiful woman who carried herself with poise, dignity and style. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and the staff at The Forum, her residence for the past 10 years.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Phyllis at St. Andrews Catholic Church, with Father Michael Watson presiding, 1899 McCoy Road Columbus, Ohio 43220 on Thursday, August 22 at 11:00 AM. Friends and family will be received at a Celebration of the Life of Phyllis Shanahan at 10:00 AM prior to funeral mass at 11:00 AM at St. Andrews Church.
