Mary Ann (Close) Stockum, age 90, formerly a longtime resident of Upper Arlington, passed away on November 20, 2024 at Ohio Living Westminster Thurber Studios in Columbus, Ohio. She was born on January 10, 1934, the daughter of Clair and Margaret Close of Dellroy, OH.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Alfred E. Stockum, MD in 2013, a brother, Joseph Close, a sister, Nellie (Close) Noble, a niece, Shirley Jean Noble (Ball) and a nephew, Gary Kuhns.
She graduated from Mount Union College with a B.S. degree in 1955 and from St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in 1957. She was an active member of Alpha Chi Omega & Alumnae Alpha Eta Chapter. Her nursing career included three years in the emergency room at Cleveland St. Lukes and then a medical nursing supervisor and diabetes educator at Ohio State University Hospital. She helped develop the Central Ohio Diabetes Association camp program for children.
Upon retirement she enjoyed being an assistant for the Ohio State School for the Blind marching band which performed at local schools and festivals. After moving to Ohio Living-Westminster Thurber Retirement Community she served on the Spiritual Life Committee, delivered mail to people in the health care unit and loved spending time with friends and family.
She and her husband were very active members of Boulevard Presbyterian Church in Grandview Heights, Ohio.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Terri Hiller, Susan Ledford, Linda Macklin, David Stockum, Sara (Sally) Kraly, Robert (Bob) Stockum, Christopher Lilley, Steven Lilley and Jay Lilley, 17 great nieces and nephews, 15 great-great nieces and nephews who embraced her in all of their lives. She loved each and every one of them.
The family would like to thank Gail, with Hospice, who became not just a caregiver, but a true friend.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1235 Northwest Blvd., Grandview Heights, OH 43212 on December 12, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. Visitation will be at the church from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. with service immediately following.
