Joseph Frederick Cofer, 82, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2016. He was born April 2, 1934 in Portsmouth, Ohio to the late Milford Jennings and Jessie Elizabeth (Steinhauer) Cofer. Joe grew up in Waverly, Ohio and graduated from Waverly High School in 1952. He earned his bachelor's degree in education from The Ohio State University and his master's degree from Xavier University. He was a Columbus Public Schools teacher for 30 years. Joe had many interests and talents. His curious nature drove him to explore his passions including art, photography, creative writing, acting, running (he completed 26 marathons), bicycling more than 200,000 miles, and travelling the world. He loved cheering on the Buckeyes. Generous and appreciative, Joe treasured his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his brother, David Cofer. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Suzanne Thomas Cofer; children, Don Thomas (Stephanie) Cofer, Caroline Elizabeth (Chris) Golon, and Alexander Jennings (Angel) Cofer; grandchildren, Lily, Xavier, and Dylan Cofer and Josie and Audrey Golon; and many other relatives and dear friends. A memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Monday, October 10, 2016 at the SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd. Columbus OH 43221. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
