John Russell Rarey passed away peacefully on August 5, 2024, in Upper Arlington, Ohio, at the age of 96. Born on October 20th, 1927 in Columbus, Ohio. He lived a full and vibrant life marked by his service, community involvement, and deep love for sports.
John graduated from Upper Arlington High School in 1945 and pursued higher education at The Ohio State University, and Franklin University in 1960, where he earned a business degree. His academic years were also distinguished by his athletic prowess, playing football, basketball, and tennis.
Following his education, John honorably served in the United States Army at General MacArthur's headquarters in Tokyo, Japan, for two years, contributing significantly during his tenure.
Professionally, John was a respected entrepreneur, owning Rarey Construction and Development in Columbus, Ohio. His career also included significant tenures at Marble Cliff Quarries and Sutphen Fire Company. John was deeply involved in community service; he was a past president of The Greater Columbus Tennis Association, a chairman of umpires and linesmen for The Buckeye Ranch, a member of the Scottish Rite: Community Lodge 684 since 1952, a member of The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio for over 50 years, a Shrine member of the Aladdin Shriners, and a member of the Northwest Kiwanis Club. Notably, he was recognized by The Ohio Home Builders Association in 1979 and generously donated several building projects to The Buckeye Ranch. John was a lifelong member of the First Community Church.
His hobbies included not only playing sports but also watching them, with a particular love for golf. He enjoyed traveling extensively, to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand being some of his favorite destinations. John was also a regular at Siesta Key, Florida, during the winter months.
John leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Ann Rarey; daughter, Barb Rarey Lott; son-in-law, Mike Dyas (Sandy Dyas); granddaughters, Gretchen Dyas Chan (Kevin Chan), Kelly Dyas, Alyssa Dyas Smith (Kyle Smith), and Ryan Lott; great-grandchildren, Addison, Payton, and Myles Chan, and Lucas and Cindy McMillan. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mayme Rarey; father, Russell S. Rarey; brothers, Charles and Robert Rarey; and daughter, Cindy Rarey Dyas.

John's life will be remembered and celebrated for his remarkable contributions to his community, his enduring jovial spirit, and his unwavering dedication to his family and friends.
A gathering to honor John's life will be held on Sunday, August 18th from 1-3pm at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST, 1740 Zollinger Road, Upper Arlington, Ohio 43221. In keeping with John's love of life, attendees are encouraged to wear colorful and casual attire.
