Jay was born in Jackson, Ohio on January 14, 1940 to the late John Albert Staten and Chloie Bea Staten (Shover). He was one of eleven children. In 1957 Jay joined the United States Navy and served for twenty years as a DK1 Petty Officer 1st Class; He also claimed to have been a brain surgeon, fighter pilot and a Navy Seal - funny thing is, he was a high school dropout.
In 1977 Jay moved his family back to Ohio. Much to his chagrin we all wanted Florida. The Blizzard of 1978 case and point. Jay began his second (or 200th) career working for The State of Ohio's prison system, working in the mechanics garage as the boss man. It's hard to believe they trusted him with the trustees. He served his time and again ...Retired.
Jay was the very best at being a husband, father and grandad! He was a born leader and his pearls of wisdom were by far the absolute best! One thing for sure is Jay could never sing or play a song on his guitar knowing every word or chord. He was great at being a Vega Brother, it took absolutely NO TALENT. A jack of all trades a master of none. Did somebody say golf? Why yes, he loved to golf but golf didn't love him. It wasn't for lack of having the perfect iron or club. He also loved his family, we were all secretly his favorites but we all knew it was Mom, but there will always be a competition between us kids to be the favorite!
He did accomplish the one thing he always wanted, his Diploma, we did not throw him a party. What killed Jay? His bad back? His bad shoulder? His bad knee? Or his BAD ATTITUDE? No one will ever know because you couldn't BELIEVE a word that man said!! If Jay didn't know, he made it up and it was believable- or was it? Jay is now OFFICIALLY RETIRED. No pension, but the lasting and undying love of his Wife, Kids and grandchildren!!
Jay is survived by his devoted wife Karen Ann Staten (Fain) and his three children Tammy (Randy) Smith, Kevin (Michelle) Staten and Kristina (Scott) Downing. Eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Harry's Happy House of Hats is officially CLOSED for BUSINESS.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
