James Wayland Cheadle, affectionately known as "Big Jim Cheadle," passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024, in Hilliard, Ohio. Born on December 23, 1942, in Rutland, Ohio, he was the beloved son of Ruth and James Cheadle.
Big Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army for four years before moving to Columbus in 1962. A hardworking and dedicated provider, he built a life for his family through his work in commercial construction, owning and managing rental properties, and ultimately retiring from General Motors. Beyond his professional endeavors, Big Jim was a long-time member and devoted volunteer at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church on West Broad Street.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Dana, Chuck, and Ronald Cheadle and two sisters, Charlotte Cheadle, and Mildred Monnell. Big Jim leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory including two sisters, Dorothy Gaines and Connie Searles; two sons, James (Alena) Cheadle Jr. and Randy Cheadle; a daughter, Teresa (Scott) Shuler-Fisher; grandchildren James Cheadle III, Olivia Cheadle, Cindy Forby, Michael Forby, Crystal (Adam) Beres, Benjamin Shuler, Kate (Austin) Hughes, Ellie Shuler, Ashley Long and Mariah Acton; as well as numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church in Big Jim's honor.
Services to honor and celebrate Big Jim's life will include a visitation on Thursday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Advantage Schoedinger, located at 3030 W. Broad Street. A second visitation will take place on Friday from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at Hoge Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2930 W. Broad Street, followed by a formal service at 11:30 AM. The graveside service will immediately follow at Sunset Cemetery in Galloway, Ohio.
