Jeremiah David Ryan, age 93 went to heaven on April 20, 2024. He was born August 4, 1930 in Washington D.C. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Anne, parents Jerry and Virginia (Sissy), sister Adelaide Kerrigan and brother Tom.
He is survived by his children; David (Christine), Ginna (Carmen) Maugeri, Michaela (Michael) McGinn, Sean (Stephanie), Kevin (Coleen), grandchildren; Melanie Harrison, Casey Ryan, Molly (Mike) Compton, Blaise Maugeri, Liam McGinn, Erin Ryan, Jacoby Ryan, Aidan McGinn, Brendan McGinn, Ryan McGinn, Kevin Ryan Jr., great grandchildren; Nola Harrison, Thomas Compton, sister Judy Ryan, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Known by most as Dave, but as Jerry to a few of his east coast friends and family, he grew up in the Washington D.C., Maryland and New York areas. Initially bound for Georgetown to play football, his plans were scuttled due to a knee injury and so he attended Villanova University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. After college he entered the army serving in the Military Police during the Korean War.
Dave spent his career as a travel executive. He followed in his father’s footsteps working for the American Automobile Association (AAA) and its affiliates. He started his career in Washington D.C., but his work with AAA brought him to Columbus soon after his marriage in 1959. Dave ultimately served in the roles of executive vice president and corporate vice president -finance before leaving AAA in 1982 after which he became the owner and president of Odyssey Travel, a holding company for Broad Street Travel and Windwalkers Air Country Club.
Dave was forever grateful for the opportunities the City of Columbus provided him. He firmly believed in giving back through volunteering, providing his knowledge and experience to many civic and service organizations. Throughout his career, he was a committee member and chair of many community and civic organizations including MORPC, Columbus Traffic Commission, Greater Columbus Convention and Vistors’ Bureau and Safety Council of the Columbus Chamber of Commerce. He was a long-time member and past president of Kiwanis Club of Columbus where he was involved in numerous committees over the years. One his family remembers well was the lemon shake-up booth at the Ohio State Fair, bees and all!
Dave also spent time volunteering with organizations focused on his faith, community and children. He was a volunteer at Mifflin Junior High teaching young people how to play chess and was a long- time volunteer and fundraiser for Rosemont School for Girls which is now a part of The Buckeye Ranch.
As soon as Dave arrived in Columbus, he worked to establish a relationship with a Catholic church. When he moved into south Arlington in 1967, he found Our Lady of Victory and was active parishioner until the final years of his life when his physical state limited his participation. The Church was integral in his daily life and the core of his being.
Dave loved his home at the French Quarter where he would often be seen sitting on the brick wall outside his house under the cherry tree reading his paper or a book. The family would like to say a special thank you to Michael McGinn and Dave’s long-term homecare provider Juleah Young who without their love and devotion he would not have been able to remain at home for as long as he did.
The family would also like to acknowledge some other special people – the parishioners of OLV, the residents of the French Quarter, close friends Dan Carpenter, Barb Jennings and Karen Hockstad and the staff of Riverview Rehabilitation and Bella Care Hospice.
