Helen Angelas James passed into God’s loving arms on Thursday, November 10, 2011 after a long, courageous, and heroic battle with kidney cancer. She closed her eyes in this world and opened them in heaven at the throne of grace. Helen was truly an angel on Earth and inspired us all with her sweetness, compassion, wit, charm, and generosity.
She lived her faith through her endless good works and countless selfless acts of helping others. Her warmth and beautiful smile, spirit, and caring way was an inspiration to all. Helen will be remembered for her beautiful smile and spirit. She was first and foremost a devoted and loving mother. Helen cared for her elderly mother for over 10 years, at the same time she was the greatest cheerleader and support to her daughter after a life-changing, paralyzing accident.
Helen was a graduate of Norwalk High School and The Ohio State University. Helen was an R.N. and private duty nurse, later returning to assisted living. She was a finalist in the “Miss Ohio” pageant and the National Hallmark Mother of the year. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church and blessed by Pope Benedict. She participated in many marathons and traveled the world with her daughter, Stacy. Helen’s hobbies included dancing, traveling, knitting, photography, target shooting, decorating for the holidays, going to the beach, and helping others.
She is preceded in heaven by her beloved parents, Michael and Poppy Angelas and her dear brother, George. She is survived by and left to cherish her beautiful memory, the pride and joy of her life, her loving children, Stacy M. James, Powell, and Randy S. (Karen) James, Worthington; her most precious grandchildren, Simon and Greta James of Worthington; her dear siblings, Gus (Connie) Angelas, Irvine, CA, Cathy (Gus) Fotos, Birmingham, AL, Paulie (Dave) Thill, Enterprise, AL; nephews and nieces, Chris Angelas, Portland, OR, Jonathan (Abbie) Thill, Enterprise, AL, Marcie (Travis) Prescott and Nicole (Lee) Creuzer, Birmingham, AL, and cousin, John (Pam) Morris, Bloomington, IN; her dearest longtime friends and love of her life, Curt Schisler; close friend, Carol Shaw; and childhood friend, Barb (Boyd) Carcopa.
Family will receive friends Tuesday, November 15, 2011 from 4-8 p.m. with the Trisagion service at 7:30 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High St., Columbus (Just south of I-270). Funeral services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 555 N. High St., Columbus, The V. Rev. Archimandrite Nicholas Serving at both services.
