Frances (fran) Flitton Compton, passed away at her home on December 12 at the age of 90. She is the mother to Steven Compton (deceased), Lisa Bateson and Suzanne Allison and mother-in-law to Michael Bateson and John Allison.
Fran graduated from the University of Minnesota in Journalism where she met Dick, her husband of 62 years who passed in 2017. She was an editor for Colliers Encyclopedia for many years before beginning a very successful career at the American Red Cross, retiring after 25 years as the Director of Donor Resources.
Fran was a devoted mother who instilled in her children the importance of family as well as the values of honesty, dedication, independence, and equality. She was an excellent cook who loved family dinners and entertaining. An accomplished photographer, she enjoyed traveling to exotic locations with Dick in search of wildlife and flowers. She also enjoyed playing the piano and guitar, as well as reading and gardening. She spent many years of her retirement as a volunteer at Forest Park Elementary school, sharing her love of journalism producing the school newspaper and tutoring students. She enjoyed Saturday college football – a true Buckeye and Minnesota Gophers fan. Fran was also a long-time member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Worthington, Ohio.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the wonderful and caring years of support provided by the Visiting Angels of Westerville, who became a very important part of our extended family. We also express our gratitude to Capitol City Hospice for the extraordinary care they provided to Fran and the family. Family will receive friends on Monday, December 18 from 4-6 pm at Advantage by Schoedinger North, 5554 Karl Road, Columbus, Ohio. A private family service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Nature Conservancy of Ohio (6375 Riverside Dr., Ste 100, Dublin, OH 43017) or to the American Red Cross.
