Edith was born in Chicago, IL, daughter of the late Richard and Lillian (Johnson) Lake. Edith graduated as Valedictorian - Class of 1936 from Chicago Public Schools at the age of 16.
She was married to Aljay Williams for nearly 60 years. She was a devoted stay at home mom and wife, raising her family as a strong and independent woman. Her two daughters, Crystal and Carolyn were the light of her world. She did everything humanly possible to safeguard them from the struggles of life. Edith and Aljay even helped to build their home large enough to house their two girls and families under one roof.
However, their daughters had other plans. When Edith's grandchildren were younger, she worked a seasonal job at Spiegel Catalog to make Christmas a very special time of year for them. Edith was truly the matriarch of our family. Although she lived a very private life, she impacted so many with her sense of style, humor, infectious outlook on life and timeless beauty.
While raising her family in Chicago, she took great care in maintaining a luscious flower and vegetable garden in addition to a 40+fruit tree orchard on her urban property. Edith loved gardening, shopping and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed and is survived by her daughters, Crystal Rose Johnson and Carolyn Jean Peavy; beloved grandchildren, Melanie, Pete, Cynthia and Carmen and a host of great-grandchildren, cousins and friends. Besides her parents, Edith was preceded in death by her husband Aljay Williams and brother, Wallace Lake.
A private Celebration of Life service will be held on her 102nd birthday, October 2, 2022. Arrangements entrusted to SCHOEDINGER NORTH, 5554 Karl Rd., Columbus, OH 43229.
