Douglas Lawrence Chambers

Douglas (“Doug”) Lawrence Chambers, age 90, of Hilliard, Ohio passed away on October 4, 2024. He was born on April 4, 1934 to the late Victor B. and Lucyette Chambers. He grew up on the family farm in southwest Franklin County and graduated from West High school in 1953. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and graduate of the Navy Machinist Mate School, Great Lakes, Illinois. He graduated from Trine University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and later a B.S. in Administration Engineering in 1961. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha, and his two children, son, Dr. Brent Chambers and wife Barbara, and daughter, Vicky Chambers Schroer and husband, Dr. Eric Schroer. He leaves seven grandchildren: Katherine Chambers, Kenneth Chambers, Audrey Chambers, Doug (AJ) Schroer, Daniel (Alice) Schroer, Leslie (Mike) Turner, Michael (Stephanie) Schroer and many great-grandchildren as well as many cherished friends at the Lakes at Mill Run Condo Association in Hilliard, Ohio. He is also survived by his older sister Joan (Richard) Jones of Marshall, Virginia and was preceded in death by his younger sister Meredith (Pete) Mills of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Doug was employed by Battelle Memorial Institute for more than 24 years as Manager of the Materials Coating Section where he performed research on nuclear materials and ion deposition processes. He graduated from the U.S. Air Force Advanced Nuclear Weapons School in 1973 at Kirkland Air Force Base, New Mexico. He received the Distinguished Inventor Award from Battelle for letters of patents for the years 1975, 1976, and 1977. He was the inventor on more than 20 patents worldwide. He received a Certified Participation Award for his work on the Sandia Laboratories Nuclear Testing “Project Cypress” at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site in 1969. He was past co-founder and president of Xytec Coatings, Inc. Under his direction, advanced designs and concepts were developed for architectural glass coating systems worldwide. He was responsible for the design, construction and start-up operations of five major coating plants in the United States and eight major glass coating plants worldwide. He was past President of the Instrument Society of America, Columbus section 1963-1964. He was past President of the Society of Vacuum Coaters 1982-1984. He was past President of the Vacuum Metallurgy Division of the American Vacuum Society 1988. He has authored or co-authored more than 55 reports and publications on coating and material applications which have won him numerous honors and awards. A celebration of life will be held at the Church at Mill Run, 3500 Mill Run Drive, Hilliard, Ohio 43026 at 4:00pm on Friday, October 25, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Upper Arlington Lutheran Church (3500 Mill Run Drive, Hilliard, Ohio 43026).
