So sorry to learn, belatedly, of Al's passing.  He was a fierce and principled friend and colleague during  my15 years on the State Bar staff, and (along with the late, great, John Welch) the first and best model of a "lawyer's lawyer" this non lawyer ever encountered.

In my 40-plus years as a PR professional and speechwriter, my favorite speech was the one I wrote to honor him as recipient of the OSBA's highest honor, the Ohio Bar Medal. What I learned from Al were things that the last four years of our country's history have threatened to obliterate: that right and wrong matter., that the rule of law is absolutely essential to preserve our way of life, and that there should be nowhere to hide for those who violate their oaths of office and abuse the power of their status as lawyers, or public officials, to pursue their own personal aggrandizement.

Sleep well, amigo. You were and are, my hero.

jeanAnd Al are two of the finest people I know. Friends for many years, A’s gentle humor and joy in life will be sorely missed. Jean, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Al  was a dear friend and colleague who inspired generations of lawyers to live up
to the highest standards of the legal profession and do the right thing. Having a 
conversation with Al and just spending time was a joy and always with a smile.
His love of Jean and his family was contagious and taught us all the importance of
family and friends. When it came to Buckeye football, Saturday’s with Al at his tailgate
was a ritual rich in tradition and a cannot miss event!
Al was a great mentor to me and his counsel was invaluable. He made me better as 
a person and as an advocate and enhanced my respect for the Rule of Law and the 
good we could do for our system of justice.
Al will always be a part of my life and his friendship enduring.

Al was the conscience of the Ohio bar.  I relied on him during my terms on the OSBA Board and as President.  If Al said something, there was no question that it was right and ethical.  In addition, he was a wonderful person and a true friend.

My love for all things Ohio State is directly influenced by Uncle Al!  I have seen pictures of me from a very young age in OSU gear with my bear, Buckeye.  Hmmm, wonder where that name came from!  Even though I ended up going to another family influenced university (John Carroll), I don't think he held that against me!  I am still an OSU super fan!  I remember many trips to Columbus with my family.  Such happy memories, one favorite being when my brother and I got to go behind the bench and see his judge's chambers.  Another favorite was visiting with my husband who could not believe how much food can go into a lunch spread with Aunt Jean.  Italians, I tell you!  We also went on a boat ride on the lake which was so much fun.  I will miss Uncle Al so much, and I will continue to proudly curse Michigan during all sporting events!  Rest in peace, sweet Uncle Al.  All my love to my Columbus family.

To: Jean and the entire Bell family-- Please accept my sincere condolences upon the passing of Al. He was a dedicated lawyer and a significant part of the OSBA staff. Al was always at the ready to weed out the "bad guys" from the Bar, while staying available to give helpful advice to those inquiring about ethical issues in order to stay on the right side of the rules. His interest in guiding lawyers through the thorny thicket of the disciplinary rules and procedures earned him a nickname of "Al, Al the Lawyers' Pal". May you all find peace in your memories of Al.

Dearest Aunt Jeannie - Betty Ann Bell Kleinhenz (my Mom) sends her love to you and your family.  Al was a wonderful brother to her.  She has shared great memories of their childhood growing up in Clintonville.  Exploring Glen Echo Ravine and picking cherries in their backyard for Grandma to make pies with.  Al was a good friend to my Dad.  They all had so much fun together tailgating as the Buckeye Nuts.  Go Bucks!  I remember visiting your home as a child and many fun times on your boat at Alum Creek Lake.  May your hearts be full of beautiful memories of your Dad.

Al Bell lived as one of the great lawyers in Ohio history. A strong leader, incredible asset to the Ohio State Bar Association, and a dear, supportive friend to so many of us. His incredible knowledge and kindly nature, with essential toughness, really made him a role model for so many. Rest in peace Al...you lived a magnificent life.

We are so very sorry. It has been our honor to care for Judge Bell - he was part of our family. Our deepest sympathies go out to Jean - what a dedicated, loving wife- and to the rest of the family. We are confident that Judge Bell is resting peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord. God's peace be with all of you. May eternal rest grant unto him, Oh Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon him.

I come from an Italian upbringing and all my uncles were like dads to all of us, that’s what we do as a Family. My most fond memories are when we as kids traveled from Cleveland to Columbus to spend a weekend on some lake and Uncle Al took us out on the lake and I attempted to try water skiing, needless to say I couldn’t even get out of the water! :joy::joy::joy:.
