Michael Lee Powell, 76, passed away Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Columbus Regional Hospital. Michael was born February 5, 1946 in Bloomington, Indiana. He was the son of Walter Loester and Violet Mae Powell. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1964 and remained in Columbus working with his family’s business. A second generation entrepreneur, he was the owner of Columbus Carpet for 30 years before retiring in 2011. Michael was a member of Memorial Baptist Church and enjoyed mission work in Kodiak, Alaska. He was also a member of the Sertoma Club. He enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and spending winters in Florida with his wife, Joan, at their home in Venice. He also enjoyed spending time with his close friends and playing euchre, dominos, and “horse collar”. Michael is survived by his wife, Joan Powell; his sons, Jason (Kendra), Chris (Kari), and Matt (Holly) Powell; step-children, Melissa (Jim) Jacques, RJ (Christie) Sturgeon, and Kellie (William) Galbraith; brother, James (Beth) Powell; sister, Bonita (John) Hall; nephew, Troy Hall; 12 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Phyllis Powell. Memorial contributions in Michael’s name may be made to the Kodiak Baptist Mission.
