Virginia Pekor Culpepper

Virginia Pekor Culpepper died on Palm Sunday April 13, 2014 at Spring Harbor. She was born in Columbus December 4, 1927, the daughter of the late Jesse Guy Pekor and Anne Gunnels Pekor, and lived in Columbus most of her life.

Mrs. Culpepper attended Wynnton Elementary and Columbus High School, Sweet Briar College, and graduated from the University of Georgia. She earned postgraduate degrees from the University of Georgia and Georgia State University.

She was a member of the initial Johnson Elementary faculty, teaching First Grade until her marriage. She lived in many different sections of the country and in Germany as an Army wife. In 1957 she returned to Columbus and taught Second Grade at South Columbus and Wynnton Elementary School. Her observation of different personality traits, ability levels and learning styles among her students led her to become a school psychologist in 1975 working in that role until her retirement in 1987. Following her retirement, she enjoyed traveling to as much of the world as she could, including intergenerational Elderhostel trips with her grandsons. She had a great life with much time spent giving to others.

Mrs. Culpepper was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the Junior League of Columbus, Phi Mu sorority, Phalo Study Club, Ivy Garden Club, CALL, as well as the Delta Kappa Gamma and Pi Kappa Phi education honor societies. She was active in volunteer work for St. Paul, and as a docent at the Columbus Museum. She also volunteered for CONTACT, Meals on Wheels, and the Columbus Alliance for Battered Women.

Survivors include her two sons, William (Yvonne) of Acworth, GA, and Robert of Columbus, and two grandsons Tom (Stephanie) and Stephen, all of the Atlanta area. She is also survived by her sister, Shirley (Jack) Fatum of Columbus, a niece, Judy Harris of California, and cousins Barbara Page and Julia Brown of Columbus, and Howard (Susan) Arnold of Asheville North Carolina.

Visitation will be at the funeral home on April 17 from 11am to 1pm followed by a memorial service at 1pm with Rev. John Fugh officiating. According to Striffler-Hamby 4071 Macon Road Columbus, GA.
