Robert Lavender Hammack “Bob” died Monday, January 12, 2015 at Gentiva Hospice. Funeral services are scheduled on Saturday, January 17, 2015, 11:00 in Edgewood Hall of Striffler-Hamby, Columbus. Interment to follow at Parkhill Cemetery and reception in the Mill Room of Striffler-Hamby. The family will receive friends Friday, January 16, 2015 from 5-7pm at the funeral home.
Mr. Hammack, son of the late Louise Lavender Hammack and Joseph Hollis Hammack, was born May 22, 1931 in Gainesville, FL. He resided in College Park GA, Butler, GA, and mostly Columbus, GA throughout his life. Mr. Hammack served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict as well as the U.S. Navy stationed in Key West FL. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1959. Mr. Hammack worked as a field engineer in Saigon Vietnam during the Vietnam War and later on retiring from AT&T. He was Baptist by faith and helped serve meal on wheels in Butler, GA. He also helped his sister Helen Hammack “Tut” who was partially disabled for many years.
Other than his parents, Mr. Hammack was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Hammack Hopkins Rugg; and brother, Bill Hammack.
He is survived by his faithful caretaker, Gary Richardson; Mike Hammock (Bussey); Judy Hammack; cousins, Betty Woodruff (Milton), Harold Moon, Robert “Skip” Rozelle; niece, Beverly Taylor (Gene); nephew, Cecil A. Hopkins (Jackie); great nephew, Scott Taylor USAF (Amanda), Milton Hopkins, Patrick Rugg (Leslie); great niece, Shannon Williamson (Dustin), Lauren Taylor; great great niece, Aubrey, Abigail; and great great nephew, Benjiman; and close friend Jessica Bailey and her children.
