A Celebration of Oma Gilbert’s Life will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at 2:00 PM in Parkhill Cemetery at the Memorial Mausoleum 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, Georgia 31907 with Reverend Andy Ginn officiating.
Mrs. Gilbert was born in Bleeker, Alabama, daughter to the late Josie Dingler Newman, Anna Lucile Newman and Joe Newman, Sr. She graduated from Smiths Station High School. Mrs. Gilbert was married to the love of her life, Robert Lee “Bobby” Gilbert for 69 years. She met Bobby at a basketball game and they married in July of 1954 after he returned from the Korean War. Mrs. Gilbert worked in banking with 39 years of dedicated service. She enjoyed gardening, sports especially Auburn football, and bowling. After retirement she and Bobby enjoyed traveling. She was a member of Rosehill United Methodist Church of Columbus, Georgia. She and Mr. Bobby were very active in their community. They assisted for years with the Brown Bag of Columbus Program where they were recognized for their dedication of service. Mrs. Gilbert was a loving wife, mom, sister and aunt who will be greatly missed by all who knew and especially loved her.
She leaves her loving memory to be cherished by her loving husband, Bobby Gilbert and son Jeff Gilbert; her sister Becky Chapman and her extended family; and many other family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, Josie, Anna and Joe Newman, Sr.; and her brothers Joe Newman, Jr. and Leon Newman.
